SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is this?

I dont like SIRIUS Hits 1 because they play very very little hip-hop & r&b music. Mostly all the music SIRIUS Hits 1 play is non black music.

I am a 20 year old black man.

XM's Channel 30 plays much much more black music than SIRIUS Hits 1.

So I switched to XM Satellite radio in my car so I can listen to XM's hitmusic station ( XM Channel 30 The Hitlist).

Sirius Hits 1 never played the following artist:

Fergie

Baby Bash

Soulja Boy

Ciara

I still got SIRIUS in my bedroom at home. I kept only 1 of my SIRIUS subscriptions in the house.

I also have an XM radio in my bedroom at home.

SIRIUS Hits 1 sounds very much like a Hot AC (Hot Adult Contemporary) radio station.

I want variety in my CHR Top 40 Radio Station so I listen to XM Channel 30 The Hitlist, instead of SIRIUS Hits 1.

Re: SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is t

I know in 2004 Sirius Hits one did play Ciara's "Goodies" almost every 2 hours when "Goodies" was at its peak of being a hit. I'm Pretty sure back in 2003 i Heard Baby Bash ft Frankie J "Suga Suga also on Sirius Hits one. and Im sure they have also Played Fergie and Soulja Boy becuase both artists have been top artist in the CHR Format.

Re: SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is t

As a frequent listener to Sirius Hits 1, I can say I don't recall Soulja Boy ever getting much airplay at all. I would also suggest that if you are looking for a more heavy R&B / Hip Hop leaning station for Hit Music, try KISS XM 21. It's great in this department.

Re: SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is this?

have you tried hot jamz (50) and heart and soul (51)?

Re: SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is this?

And I am very thankful for this!
Nothing against Hip-Hop, but its not my thing, and it really is not Top 40.
I've noticed that a lot of egular OTA Mainstream CHR stations add Hip-Hop to their playlist because they have to compete between Hot AC and Rhythmic CHR stations. I'm guessing these songs test well to their audience. This never used to happen in the 80s and early 90s. I feel like telling "Hip-Hop and R & B" fans to "take it outside."

But no such problem with Sirius or XM.
Thank goodness for that. Now I can hear my Top 40 in peace!

Actually, hip hop is a major player on the top 40 chart.

According to Billboard top 100 airplay,
#1 Lil Wayne - Lollipop
#6 Usher Featuring Young Jeezy - Love in this club
#8 Ray J & Yung Berg - Sexy Can I
#12 Danity Kane Damaged
#13 Lil Wayne Featuring T-Pain Got Money
#14 Plies Featuring Ne-Yo Bust It Baby Part 2

Frankly, I was going to go up to position 40, but even the most dense individual would get the point by position 14 that hip hop is clearly hit music. You saying that hip hop is not top 40 only tells of your lack of knowledge of what top 40 is (hint, it's the top 40 most popular songs) OR suggests a personal bias against this genre of music. Either way, you are misinformed.

No way man, radio stations play songs that test well? I hope you consult, because that insight is profound! How about this? OTA Mainstream top 40 stations play hip hop because they play the top 40, and hip hop is the top 40.

There's no excuse for why Sirius Hits 1 is programmed like an Adult Top 40. It's one of the reasons I dropped my sub last week. I can listen to a much better programmed top 40 station in TALLAHASSEE, of all the places in America. Divorcing hip hop from sirius hits one sadly shortchanges listeners who don't have another avenue for top 40. With no true top 40 station or a rhythmic/chr station (Hot Jamz is Urban Contemporary), most local markets have more to offer in terms of rhythmic music than a 100+ channel satellite music provider. After listening to Sirius Hits 1 just yesterday for over an hour since they play it at my club house's pool, to only hear Outkast- Miss Jackson as the SOLE hip hop song, there's a BIG problem with Sirius Hits 1- or maybe more appropriately, Alt Nation 2.

I don't know if you work for a radio station or not, but at the ones I've worked at, they always tested their music, and only the ones that tested well made the regular playlist. That is just how it is.

As for your second point, you are quoting a survey of average airplay, that neither makes them "Hits" nor does it mean those songs should be played. Hip Hop belongs on a Hip Hop channel, just like Metal belongs on a Rock station.

Since Hits 1 is billed as a nationwide top 40 channel, it shouldn't be skewed to any local market bias. It should simply be a reflection of the top 40 songs. SALES is the test.

No, if it's in the top 40, it is game for airplay. As it has been brought up on many other boards, if you're letting your bias get in the way of selecting your playlist, you're not doing your job. Count how many songs we've personally hated that have been in the top 40- granted they won't come back as a recurrent, but not playing them defeats the purpose of a mainstream/top 40 station.

Metal/hip hop doesn't belong on an ADULT/CHR. When there's already a Hot/AC (sirius 2), a Modern AC/ Adult CHR (sirius 9), you've already got two stations subscribing to that belief. Sirius Hits 1 isn't supposed to target OUR/YOUR musical preferences, it's supposed to primarily serve a very young demographic. Otherwise you're trying to bill it as a station that it is not. I can buy the metal shouldn't be on a mainstream/chr argument at the moment since there aren't any metal songs tracking in the top 40 airplay, but to say that hip hop doesn't deserve airplay on the top 40 stations is a dated philosophy from the early 80's, before the split of the safe ac-based top 40 stations into the hot hits format, which is what today's CHR's derive from. The "hip hop is dead" movement has been strong on these boards since the late 90's, and it has outlived the staying power of DMX, Jay Z, Eminem, Ludacris, Lil Jon, etc. It is not going anywhere. If Sirius Hits 1 had real competition to deal with, or if it was on terrestrial radio, or it had discriminating advertisers that wanted a specific demographic, THEN the pressure to adhere to a strict top 40 style would give it a draw beyond the admittedly good airstaff. It's the best programmed top 40 in america until you consider the music!

I feel the same way about this....

I remember Hits 1 being a overall Mainstream CHR playing All The Hits. XM 20 on 20 is the best, only if they played recurrents & golds with their currents. Hits 1 needs to improve... and GEESH, stop being afraid to play the rap version of the song. It sounds like a 90's And Now... and they add stiffs.

Re: SIRIUS Hits 1 has a very heavy non hip-hop music and r&b music lean. Why is this?

"Top 40" as a format started dying its painful death in 1988, and finally expired on November 30, 1991.

Why?

1988 saw Louis Armstrong's "What A Wonderful World" enter the Top 40 for the first time, due to its inclusion in the movie "Good Morning, Vietnam" and its presence on the soundtrack. Most pop-oriented "Top 40" stations were hesitant to play it, since it was completely unsuitable for most of their listeners.

November 30, 1991, was the date that the first Billboard Hot 100 came out that had been impacted by SoundScan, which was more accurate in tracking over the counter purchases of music. This brought a number of new country acts into the Top 40 for the first time, which was also seen as unsuitable for most pop-oriented fans of Top 40 radio.

What some people still call "Top 40" is more properly called CHR, "Contemporary Hits Radio." It's a pop-oriented, tight, high-repetition format of approximately 100-200 songs, with an emphasis on a core of current pop hits and a few recent recurrents. That's what Sirius Hits 1 (I still prefer the old name of US 1) is intended to be.

Your Actually Right and good you honestly will say that you have noticed that SIRIUS HITS 1 ignores new hip-hop like Cyclone by Baby Bash and Crank That by Soulja Boy.

SIRIUS Hits 1 sounds like a Hot Adult Contemporary (HOT AC) radio station, because most Hot AC's in America play no hip-hop and sometimes no R&B music.

Maybe SIRIUS HITS 1 should use the slogan that the HOT AC radio station here where I live at in Detroit use named 96.3 WDVD "Today's Best Hit's Without The Rap"

www.963wdvd.com

Top 40 lovers never subscribe to SIRIUS for Top 40, subscribe to XM for Top 40.

SIRIUS HITS 1 "Today's Best Hits Without The Rap"

SIRIUS Has No Top 40 Channel, but they have 2 Hot AC's named The Pulse(Channel 9) and Hits 1 (Channel 1).
