Sixers game on 1340 WHAT? What is CBS radio or the Sixers thinking?

I don't understand why did CBS radio or the sixers put tonight's game at the Hawks on WHAT 1340 AM? WOGL, WYSP or KYW should be airing this game since their signals covers the entire area, 1340 AM covers the city limits. Tonight: WIP Has the Flyers game on and WPHT has the Phillies game on. I think that CBS radio should relinquish the Sixers, Flyers and/or Phillies radio contracts to WPEN or some other radio station in town with a huge coverage signal area like the city's FM stations for example so they don't have to deal with this problem when the Eagles be on WIP and WYSP next season and this type of problem might happen again. It may happen again if both the Sixers and Flyers make the playoffs this month.

plus, who gives a darn about a sixers' road game in atlanta? if it was at the wachovia center...sure. but the flyers were at home, and baseball is a much bigger draw on radio than basketball. not exactly a decision that dealt with rocket science here.

As the radio rights holder, they didn't have to place the Sixer game anywhere, with their primary and overflow stations both occupied.

I know that TV is not radio, but at least the Sixers were on OTA TV via The CW Philly. CBS at least gave the game with the weakest radio coverage the widest TV coverage. CBS also gave the 50k signal to the Phillies, and their TV was on the Comcast-only (not even FIOS) CN8.

Huge sports night though, given the Sixers and Flyers both clinched playoff berths the same night.

Jul...some good posts lately.

To be honest, the Sixers are not a programming crown jewel. Nor the Flyers. I onced programmed a station that carried all 4, Phils, Eagles, Flyers, Sixers. We sold it in an annual sports package, as when the Phils end, the Flyers/Sixers are getting underway. The main conflict was weekend games in September with Phils/Birds. And on occasion, schedules like last night.

The Phils did ok, the Eagles were a ratings winner, even when they stank up the joint. But the others...when they had a great year and were in the playoffs, the Spring ratings were heartbreakingly low. My boss at the time quipped: "There are 18,000 rabid Flyers fans in the Delaware Valley, and 16,800 of them are at the Spectrum". Sorry to say, much the same for Sixers. Check the miserable ratings for NHL Stanley Cup Games on TV last year. The network lost it's shirt. Same for NBA. Nascar's feeling a softening of ratings as well.

76'ers and Flyers can be draws on TV, but no longer on radio. At one time they were, but no longer, with practicly every game on some TV channel.

And you are not going to mess up your music stations with a one time airing of the Sixers. And KYW learned a long time ago as the Phillie's Flag Ship station that you don't mess up "All News-All The Time" by carrying sports play-by-play.

The few people who would listen to the Sixers on radio were in the 1340 coverage area.

Brace yourselves for Friday night, 4/11.

Flyers @ Washington (NHL Playoffs)
Sixers @ Indiana (NBA)
Phillies vs. Cubs (MLB regular season)

Sixers probably draw the short straw again.

I don't particularly care as much about these conflicts; however, I will make the argument that, at least if one of the locals are in the playoffs, WYSP should come into the fold. But since WPHT is the Phils flagship, and WIP aligns itself with the Flyers, moving them to another station other than the one they have been on all season might throw off some listeners. Now if the 76ers make the playoffs, that should warrant a stronger stick than 1340.

Per Sixers.com their game is on 610 and the Flyers are getting bumped.

WIP's website says the Flyers get the airwaves.

I don't think that is correct. Contact the team about this: http://www.nba.com/sixers/contact/ According to someone at the team WYSP will air the Sixers games that get bumped by the Flyers for the rest of this season (subject to change)

Posters, please contact, WIP, the sixers and flyers about this so this can be cleared up.

I don't know what are you talking about. All I was asking is asking the posters, not me to contact WIP, The sixers and Flyers about the radio schedule for the rest of the this season

Oh, I thought it was some sort of call to action.

Either way, I really don't see the importance of knowing the schedule for the rest of the season right this very second. We'll find out when we find out.

Why not bump one of the 3 games over to WYSP? They've bumped Sixers games there before. Keep it on a CBS owned station? I'd say put the Phillies on FM. Baseball sounds great in stereo!

Because it’s more fun listen to a ball game through the genuine electromagnetic static filled 1340 skywave. Fit’s perfect with the crowd noise. All we need are a few cracks of lightning, and it will be just the way I remember it as a kid. Actually, I haven’t grown up yet, so it will be just like yesterday, or the night before last. Just look at it this way. Here’s the perfect opportunity to rebuild an old external ferrite antenna, for those endless hours of twisting, turning, and tuning. Remember, it’s just more fun with your thumb, on AM!!

Tomorrow's Sixers game will be on WYSP.

I can't wait until the Eagles play in the 08 season because I would like to know how will CBS handle this situation if it happens again while the Eagles are on WIP and WYSP at the same time.
