Smokin' Joe Hager/Beamer - Aircheck - KDWB-FM - December 31, 1976

MN Maniac

"Smokin' Joe" plays back the #1 songs of previous years in advance of KDWB's "Top 101 of 1976" countdown. Here's the first segment, beginning promptly at 6:00PM.

At the time, Joe was one of the top jocks in the Twin Cities. Those of you in North Florida are no doubt familiar with his later years at WKQL "Cool 96.9" in Jacksonville.

Consider this a tribute to one of the Twin Cities' top night jocks during the glory days of Top 40 radio. R.I.P, Joe.

Wow, thanks so much for this MN, I enjoyed hearing it. I remember hearing Smokin' Joe on Cool 96.9 but it wasn't for too long. He must have gotten really ill not to long after I got to Jax. It seemed Tom Murphy filled in for Smokin'Joe for a long time. Personality and great music. How I miss that combo when radio was truly your friend.

Joe was a great jock. I could pull him in from Ocala on my car radio. Lots of energy and of course, he knew the music on Cool 96.9 because he played 'em when they were currents on Top 40 radio.

I will be posting more segments of Joe on KDWB in the days to come.

I first remember hearing Smokin' Joe on "15 KSTP", back when they first went top 40. What a great staff that station had with people like "Machine Gun" Kelley, Chuck Knapp, and other greats! Smokin' Joe was one of the best!
