It's bad enough for us smooth jazz fans that Smooth Jazz 98.1 switched to a more r&b/adult contemporary station last year, but I had the station on today and was surprised how much more they've moved on from even that.

Smooth 98.1 is now the classic "Soft Rock" station. I had the station on for several hours and I felt like I was sitting in an office in the late 90's with a local "Soft Rock" station on.

I mean, look at this fricken playlist!:

Even their drops are no longer "smooth" sounding. They sound like exact replicas of the "Soft Rock" station drops I used to hear back in the 90s on my local soft rock station in MA.

However, the most likely reason that they haven't renamed themselves to "Soft Rock" is that that moniker is pretty much dead.

Smooth FM is not an inappropriate name for an AC station... KYXY is a stupid name if you ask me (I know it's the call letters but sounds dumb)

Sunny 98.1 would be a good name since we are in Sunny San Diego and it's weird no one has utilized that.

Sunny was used a long time ago in the early 90's. Sunny 103.7

It sounds like the same singers from ReelWorld who sing KISS FM in LA and REV FM in the Bay. It sounds similar.

"Sunny" is technically in use here on 94.1 HD-2...for the 5 people who have HD radios and can get the signal not to cut out.

Wow not even a Smooth Jazz track once a hour. I rented a car here in LA this week by LAX and 98.1 was coming in loud and clear. Aint nothing Smooth about that playlist striaght AC. Whats really sad it sounds better than our KOST.

Five? I own three of them! You are very correct on the signal strength; HDRadio is a FCC sham and I wonder who was on the $$$ from iBiquity's In-Band-On-Channel-In-Cash-Till service.

For the record 96.5's original call letters were KSDO-FM then became KFMX. After a sale it requested the call letters KyXy they were not just picked out of no where and asigned to the station.

Also Iboc was never ever about making money with the format. It is a legal interference generator to make sure that you cant DX FM and especially AM. It's all about getting more bandwidth for the channel. It was also the NAB's answer to blanking out LPFM's and translators.

I listened to the online stream earlier. They are definitely sounding more soft rock. They just may declare that as their default format and keep the "Smooth" name (Much like Z90, going from rock to it's current format back in 1990, but only adding "Jammin'").

Is this the station that used to have "Lights Out Jazz," or, as I liked to call it, "Jazz for people who don't like jazz?"

There also a SMOOTH FM in United Kingdom that plays Adult Contemporary Music. Smooth 102.2 in London UK, and 100.4 Smooth FM in Manchester/Liverpool UK.

I know this an old topic, but I decided to take a listen to the new "KIFM" and see how it compared to the old KIFM, which was usually one of the highest rated smooth jazz stations in the country. Wow, totally different. I thought it would sound like Cleveland's Smooth FM station (107.3/WNWV) which has a mix of Smooth Jazz/Soft AC and actually sounds pretty decent, but this definitely sounds like just another soft rock station. They should have done a smooth jazz/soft AC and include some local artist like WNWV does.

Great station. Great format.

Perfect mix of music that offices can keep on all day!

Other stations in other markets will follow their lead in the future.
