So.....Whats new in Radio in the Burgh in 2014???

Yep, It's the same old song and dance all over the dial. The same old handful of local talk hosts, no new talent, more syndicated programming and infomercials. Music stations are still playing played-out songs, voice-tracking DJ's and jamming even more commercials down our throats. But what can you expect when the big radio companies are in debt up to their eyeballs? They can't make a profit. They are in no position to pay for talent and staff to put new stuff on the air! Especially in Pittsburgh.

The technology to record high quality audio has become much more economical than ever. A garage band with a good mic or two, a PC with Pro Tools, and a little time can now make recordings that have the same (or better!) technical quality as studio recordings of the 60's and 70's. Heck, with one good USB mic and a laptop you can record outstanding sound. I've seen videos on YouTube made at "open mic" sessions at bars all around the country that sound at least as good as famous live albums from the classic rock era. So what's preventing an enterprising audiophile from putting together a live-on-digital-recorder show like "The Prairie Home Companion"? People are putting that sort of programming on YouTube on micro-shoestring budgets all the time, and often the video is nothing more than a talking head that you could ignore and still enjoy the show just as much. I don't expect any of the corporate owner, mass-media stations to do that sort of thing, but there's no reason why there isn't exciting, unique programming like that on the listener supported stations.

I just read over on the heavily censored radio forum on Voy that my post above is "trolling". Also, some anonymous person hiding behind a pseudonym claims to know who I am.

Maybe the reason that there is so little to say about what's new in Radio in the 'Burgh in 2014 is that if anyone attempts to say anything that the guy running Voy forum doesn't like, they're called a "troll" and censored.

I must have struck a nerve. Looks like no one is willing to post over here for fear of getting on the wrong side of the censor over on the Voy forum. If he doesn't like you, it doesn't matter what you post, it is never, ever seen.

Not at all - I used to check out that Voy forum myself every once and a while and when I would post a very occasional comment on something that at least was remotely interesting - I noticed that my comments where never approved by the moderator too... so I no longer visit that site. There is a difference between moderation and censorship I agree. Oh and yes EVERYBODY uses a screen name on the internet.

I did just realize that there is one really good thing about the Pittsburgh Radio and TV "discussion" forum on Voy. You can check into it only once a week and it still only takes a minute or two to read all the new "discussions".
