The technology to record high quality audio has become much more economical than ever. A garage band with a good mic or two, a PC with Pro Tools, and a little time can now make recordings that have the same (or better!) technical quality as studio recordings of the 60's and 70's. Heck, with one good USB mic and a laptop you can record outstanding sound. I've seen videos on YouTube made at "open mic" sessions at bars all around the country that sound at least as good as famous live albums from the classic rock era. So what's preventing an enterprising audiophile from putting together a live-on-digital-recorder show like "The Prairie Home Companion"? People are putting that sort of programming on YouTube on micro-shoestring budgets all the time, and often the video is nothing more than a talking head that you could ignore and still enjoy the show just as much. I don't expect any of the corporate owner, mass-media stations to do that sort of thing, but there's no reason why there isn't exciting, unique programming like that on the listener supported stations.
