Some PDs need to set their alarm clocks earlier and get on the air

Well props to PRO-FM for at least breaking in to the annual Gio & Kim flashbacks with news of the explosions in London but the flipside is that it was back to the flashbacks again in progress. Very sloppy but it's no one's fault there other than the PD who even approves these "best of" shows because no one else at the station can really handle the shift. Here's a novel idea Tony. Do it yourself. I don't think the audience is going to flock over to Coast because the dynamic duo is on vacation for a week. Here's another novel idea: Gio & Kim don't both take the same week so one always works with Will.

Also Rick Everett has been around long enough & on the air enough to know that mornings on Cat Country sounds like WBRU on a bad day without Lemire. So put in a longer day & do the shift or in this case, you actually do have others at the station who can handle it. Mornings aren't supposed to sound bush league.

Maybe you don't have the budget to hire the people you'd really want to hire but you both have enough experience to work with what you have more creatively. If you can't figure out where to begin, start by listening to some surrounding smaller market stations who actually do it better. Market 34 is fine & dandy for those who think size matters but when size is a result of a growing population of non-English speaking people it means nothing to your stations.

I think we've reached a point where the real passion is at the stations in markets smaller than Providence. Maybe they just try harder to prove something which is ironic since many already sound better than they think. The smugness & lack of enthusiasm around here at some stations is incredible.

Regarding the taking of two different vacation times.

For the listeners, it is a little better for both hosts to be out and the whole "show" take a vacation simultaneously. If you truly listen to a station or "show" you will find that if one of them is missing it changes the whole dynamic and chemistry. I know that with Gio, Kim & Will, I have heard them before they seem to keep it, but you can still feel that part missing.

I personally noticed this last week when Gresh was on vacation from The Score. I mean, I like Scott, but I found the show not as interesting without the two of them there. Even if they had a replacement for Gresh on vacation, it still would have lacked from the way their personalities meld/clash.

Oh well just my opinion...haha..

The week of July 4th is as close to a "national vacation week" as this country ever has. About half the nation's workforce (maybe a little more than that) is on vacation this week.

I do know that the smallest weekly prime-time TV viewing audience each year is on the week of July 4th; I suspect the same is true of radio.

Given reduced listening levels this week, and with many people who would normally listen to radio not doing so this week because they're on vacation, many morning shows take the week off. That's why there's so many "best-ofs" this week for both morning shows and most nationally-syndicated talk shows.

I would have to agree with that completely. I know that when I was out, I didn't even think of the radio except while driving from one stop to the other, not like here at work where I listen all day.

So, it would make the most sense for most hosts to vacation from their shows simultaneously.

Most already do.

I think I went on this same rant last year so I'll end it but at Coast and B101 the PD subs mornings and HJY thinks enough of the morning show to put Palmieri on it. There are currently 2 jockless morning drive shifts in Boston. Stations that keep this up had better look at the long term importance of the shift itself or suffer the same fate.

Sorry to but in from out of town...

We actually see major bumps in our listenership July 4th and memorial day weeks. We are, not coincidentally, a beach market. Even if we weren't, there's no better time to give your night jock some prime time experience. It's invigorating for someone newer in the biz to step forward and do the shift.

In our case, our regular morning person usually does the sift through holidays, then takes comp. If not, we move our PM drive up and give him a financial incentive for the week.
