Some random radio-related thoughts via my Cape trip this July 4th wknd...

Road trips are always good, as not only as a getaway, but to a radio nerd like myself it gives me a chance to check out radio in another place other than home. My trip to Truro, MA this weekend gave me the following thoughts:

- Amazes me that the Cape stations as a whole have a MUCH better Rhythmic/CHR/Rap etc. selection than major city Boston does? 96.3 The Rose is excellent as always, and I got to check out CHR 103.9 WKPE "Cape 104" for the first time which to me sounds really good with lots of rhythmic and urban leaning tracks that I hadn't even HEARD yet on the Boston stations. Along with Fun 107 out of New Bedford, these stations trounce the crap out of what's heard of up in Boston. Even 106 WCOD has a much better selection. Just doesn't seem right...Boston, are you listening?

-Some DX catches on the cape: 97.5 WOKQ out of Rochester NH, 100.3 WHEB out of Portsmouth, 92.5 WXRV out of Haverhill, 99.3 out of Block Island RI and most amazingly 102.9 WBLM bleeding into WPXC Pixy 103 ON THE CAPE, yes thats right 'BLM bleeding into Pixy on the Cape, crazy tropo going on.

-Also on another signal related topic I find it funny when most of the Boston stations fade out just past the bridge only to come back once you get out on the outer cape towards Wellfleet and Truro which are more north...

Hope you all had a great 4th weekend!

Oh you shouldn't be surprised to get NH seacoast and ME stations over the water, both AM and FM.
I went to the Cape on Fri and part of yesterday to visit my Dad, etc. and found similar results.
This is both typical of summer weather bringing the signals up like that, and the "just across
the water" phenomenon.

(In days gone by I would pick up CHSJ 700 in Gloucester like a local! Now shut off.)

I also took a brief side trip on the way back to drive around Nantasket Beach/Hull area and WMWM
was coming in across the water from Salem (country show, Sat afternoon) despite WUMB being
nearby. If WUMB were on a diff. freq., WMWM could do well down there. But again this was on
the very northern edge of the Hull peninsula.

It's just funny, because the Cape and Portland Maine aren't exactly hot spots with what you could call Urban or Rhythmic music or culture for that matter. Boston has a real urban scene that obviously gets overlooked completely (except for pirate stations of course, but that's another story) by suits out of town. But I guess thats just the way it works.

96.3 The Rose easily surpasses the boring playlist Jam'n puts out.
It never ceases to amaze me how strongly programmed that station is, compared to its counterpart in Boston.
Almost seems to me like Boston stations are afraid to step up to that next level. Are they concerned it wouldn't appeal to enough people?
If so --- and that's my theory --- it's a sad commentary on the lack of guts those in charge of so-called hip-hop stations in Boston.
They should tune in to 96.3 or pick it up online.
I haven't listened to the New Bedford station yet, but that's next on my list of stations I have to check out.

I agree about Cape Cod radio. 99.9 WQRC and Ocean 104.7 have a much better selection than Magic 106.7, and maybe even WPLM. If I were able to get them here, I would. And that DX you got was amazing. Did you do any TV DX'ing at all?

hmm..WBIM...do I detect a Bridgewater State College alum? ;) ...FUN is in a great location...and they go out on a limb putting on new music that you end up hearing down the road in boston. At least before I moved it did. It was great to play new music first then to be at a station that would add a song once it hit AT40
