Something old and new has been added to New Orleans Radio

First something old;
WBOK 1230 am has returned to the air with smooth jazz not hollar for dollar programing, Are they stunting or testing new equipment and transmitter, maybe, but the sound quality hasn't been that good in decades at 1230, although there is no station ID's as of yet. I hope it stays with this format.(Wishfull thinking ;))

Something new;
WNKV 91.1 FM Norco, La has signed on as K-Love. Acording to RECnet and FCC, the transmitter is located in Des Allemands so the signal can be heard as far as South Lafourche.

This must be pretty new setup as I hadn't heard them on the frequency (as in last few days I don't remember them)

But surprisingly, this station went from a flea power setup in Norco proper cp (1kw at 60 feet) to a CP to put out 2kw on a tower in Bayou Gauche at 320 feet to a cp for 4.7kw on a 220 foot tower still in Bayou Gauche (which had a application sent in on the 20th of August for a license.) to a cp application to go to 50kw directional (due to LSU and others close by to the frequency) on the previous 320 foot tower !

WBOK according to recnet , changed hands earlier this year from Christian broadcasting to Bakewell Industries of Louisiana. This station is now owned by L.A. Newspaper publisher and community activist Danny Bakewell Sr. and Jr. as the address listed goes to the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper office . So hopefully as you stated the smooth jazz will stay. And apparently from what I read, they like to make improvements in their properties hince the sound is so good.

I'm still trying to figure it out, but 91.1 may also see a signal from Empire as apparently a Cp was issued for that area and that frequency at the end of June.

Thanks RFLA;
I did not get a chance to check the ownership info before posting. Yesterday when I was in Slidell/ New Orleans I found It channel surfing. On a whim I went out to the tower site on Abundance near Franklin ave. and saw major inprovments to the tower. The old one was a free standing base with the top 30 feet as the antenna, but was folded in half after the storm. I don't know if they kept the old base but the top is new with six long wires running down its side, and a fresh coat of paint on it.

As for 91.1 I know it was on on saturday morning. I keep my sirius sat radio's FM transmitter on 91.1, so it had to come on air around noonish.

I was curious about WNKV (?) at 91.1 in Norco and will surf it when in the area as I have family in and around Norco. A quick Google of the WNKV call letters revealed a 105.5 in the New England area.
Could it be another combination of these letters?

The station in Vermont had it apparently for a long time (1985 until 1998 now it's WKXH) but nope this station has been WNKV since November 10 of last year.

RFLA came up with idea of it possibly being a Black talk because of what the new owners did for a small Los Angles newspaper to make it successful, but only the ownership knows. They are sinking a lot of money to fix and upgrade the station. I for one am kind of enjoying music (other than gospel) heard on the AM like in the old days. Granted; I know it it only temporary until the studios and building on Gentilly Blvd are repaired and renovated. You should see the upgrades they did to the tower. Although with what they are playing now I'm waiting to hear Willie Nelson followed by George Clinton and the Parliment Funkadelic ;D

As mentioned in the wikipedia article for WBOK, the owners are a prominent group of real estate developers and owners of the African American newspaper in Los Angeles called the Los Angeles Sentinel.

Figuring the newspaper and the amount of money put into it to be a highly promoted voice in Los Angeles, I figured he may try to do the same thing with a radio station in New Orleans after he bought it and was mentioned here... Think about it, "a voice for the disenfranchised blacks in New Orleans" that the others are claiming are being ignored in Post K NOLA.

As I stated to GJRousse, the music currently may be to test a new transmitter and board for what ever they do propose to play on there. Like I told him, when KNOU 104.5 was in burn in mode, it pretty much played a mix of music including portions of a live Garth Brooks album.

but I've heard ac/dc, Sammy Kershaw (w/ Laurie Morgan) and lots of 80s songs

Nothing from 104.5 in a long time...

One of the early 80's AC/DC songs and Sammy's song was "He drinks Tequila" from 2001

It's a weird mix of late 60s-early 70s oldies,80s hits,country,and some R&B

For example the song playing now is "Superfreak" by Rick James

now There rebroadcasting Q93 with no warning. I wonder if somebody did not like what was on turned off the CD player and accidently put it in radio mode. We'll see what happens when clearchannel calls for a ciest and desist order

...or is apparently a fan of this website and wants to see what we will comment on next ;D

I swear things that are said,joked, or opinionated seem to make it in the media more times than naught. ???

Wrong song smashedcd...

Sammy Kershaw did a little known song (only hit 39 on country charts) called "He drinks Tequila (and she talks dirty in spanish)" It's a duo with Lorie Morgan from their brief marriage....

Would be cool to hear Sammy Hagar's version though on AM.

Haven't heard some of those great rock songs on AM in years.. Not since Guaranty lost their sat feed for ESPN and relayed some of the KXOR playlists over 1490 KJIN.
