True story: KHJ Los Angeles added "Lola", played it for a week, and then pulled it. Went to #9 in Billboard without 'em.
I would bet it got airplay on KRLA and of course KMET. Although KMET wasn't a chart reporter at the time.

I Liked the song. It was considered controversial at the time, but I had nothing against it.What's wrong with Luca? Its lyrics aren't questionable. Did you just not like the song?

Sounds like Mr. Sklar got played...Record company intervention is what got "Honky Tonk Women" by the Rolling Stones on WABC. London Records convinced Rick Sklar that the line was "played a divorcee in New York City", not "laid..."
Of course, they lied, but...
Randy Newman's "Short People."
I can actually see both points of view on that one. I get the sarcasm of what he was trying to say, but it's easy for it to be misinterpreted.Ah, that misbegotten classic, which the vast majority failed to see the sarcasm in.

Then there's Donna Summer ...
It was to build awareness, not an endorsement of domestic violence.Luka was rather controversial. It was about domestic abuse. The lyrics, in part:
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
I would bet it got airplay on KRLA and of course KMET. Although KMET wasn't a chart reporter at the time.
Love to love you baby had Donna Summer singing an orgasm.
Heart - All I Want To Do Is Make Love To You
DiVinyls - I Touch Myself
Then the song should have been cited and not the artist. Donna's entire catalog isn't part of this.Love to love you baby had Donna Summer singing an orgasm.

Yeah, that one kinda surprised me, too. No different from Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop" six years earlier, but a lot more explicit.
There are people who think the song is about a hooker, but the album cover has Donna in a waitress uniform, and she’d already done the definitive hooker song (“Bad Girls”), so…Wait ... you mean it's okay to play "She Works Hard For The Money"?
Excuse me while I put that back into active rotation ... 😜
