Songs heard on South Florida Radio will never be heard again.

But my question is.....didn't the song "take off" about 5 years after it was recorded? (Wishin')

cd

Yes and No. It actually was a monster right out of the box in 1977 and then became popular again years later. Remember Benny Mardones "Into The Night"? It released in 1980 had some success and re-released in 1989/1990 and had another good run. Phil Collins "In The Air Tonight" is another example. Released in 1981, but had a much better run once it was on Miami Vice in 1984.

There are times a re-release brings a record into the next level. Sometimes a TV show, commercial or a Movie will play a track and those who don't know the history of a song will think it's new and I guess that's why they become popular again.

Couple of more to add to list:

Debarge - All this love
Alisha - Baby Talk

One more to add-- "Suavecito" by Malo.

I remember Kid Curry did have it playing every so often back in the late 80s/early 90s on Power, but that was the last I heard of it on the Miami airwaves.
When 103.5 was known as Mega 103.5, Suavecito by Malo played often. Hasn't played in Miami since Mega flipped in 2002.

DavidEduardo, and what happened to Freddy Cruz at Hot 105?

I don't know... he was my night jock at WHTT in 1981!
He's still on the air at Hot 105 as host of "The Quiet Storm".

I remember the Tampa stations beating "Baby Talks Dirty" by The Knack to death when I was at First Phone School in Sarasota but it didn't do that well nationally.

Funny enough, soon after I posted that I heard it on Clasica 92.3!

Since you brought up Tampa, we heard a lot of these songs over there too, especially "Numbers" by Kraftwerk & "Give Me Tonight" by Shannon and most of those novelty songs that jcblanco mentioned. Another song that got a ton of play in Tampa (and I'm assuming it did in So. FL too) was "Object of My Desire" by Starpoint.

Summergirls / Dino was big all across the Gulf Coast.

I remember it being pretty hot in Houston,TX and on 93-QID Alexandria, LA.

It saw lots of spins at night on the day-parted N. Miss CHR I worked at. We were soft during the day for the banks and department stores so it didn't fit well then.

songs usually exclusive to this market:

exposed to love - exposé (original version, not the remake played on 93.9)
only in the night - voyce in fashion
wanna be startin' somethin - pso
smurf rock - gigolo tony
welcome - gino latino
miami - j grey & mr. mixx
voices in your head - paris by air
dance all night - poison clan
sending all my love - linear (think they still play this one)
my part of town - tuff crew (philly band, but was played a lot here in the late 80s/early 90s)
doo doo brown - 2 hype brothers and a dog (who's really Frank Ski from atlanta's V103)

miami market had quite a crew of talented producers that really took hold of the hits back in the day. People like Tony Garcia, Amos Larkin II, and Lewis A. Martinee.

its a shame hack jobs like DJ Khaled are getting all the credit for the 'scene' here...to which i question,, what scene? the rick ross slo-motion rap scene?? really???? is that miami???

Shannon and Alisha were played often on WHTZ and WPLJ New York during the the 80s. Their music was often heard in dance clubs around the NY area back then. Not sure if the present WKTU plays Shannon and Alisha these days. :)
