Songs That Were Local Hits but didn't make the Top 40 Nationally

Anyone remember watching on ch. 7, videos that WHTT use to simulcast? It was in the early 80s and I think that it was on Friday or Saturday nights. They would play the top 10 requested but would also highlight a local artist video.

Oh yeah! That was HOT HIT VIDEOS when MTV broke on the scene, EVERYONE wanted their slice of the pie. NBC had FRIDAY NIGHT VIDEOS on very late-12:30(Letterman had the day off then) after Carson. I believe, they actually paid big bucks to debut Jackson's THRILLER mini-movie music video.

CHannel 7 showed HOT HIT VIDEO every day(!)at about 4pm before the early news-that was an hour show-this was in 1984. Bill Smith used to host that. I think the weekday one died off, but the weekend one kept on -on Saturday nites late, 11:30pm it was HOT HIT VIDEOS again, with Doug Alling and Cindy Balin. That was the 90 minute version, filmed at the Palace Entertainment Complex(torn down a few years ago after it became a seedy, run down hang out, it's now a LOwes or something) with all the old car props and stuff. They'd indeed do a local artist video. Both shows petered out around or before the time that WHTT Hot Hit Radio 103(now Oldies!) sort of went through a staggered format change, around 1986 to A/C that wound it up, eventually in the Oldies 103 in 1987.

RIght about this time-1983/4(?) V66 was born to give a UHF alternative to MTV which was like something you could only see if your friend got cable at *their* house. It was like your same friend with the color TV around 1969-70. Ah, the days. V66 was the home to alot of local artist videos, including the aforementioned New Man and Face To Face. In fact some of V66's videos were so obscure and crazy, you never saw them much on MTV in rotation. And then one day, after alot of success, much to,apparently, even the VJ's surprise...V66 was sold to HSN overnight.

A very sad day.
V66 > MTV
It was always nice to see the local artist from the radio on T.V.
It would be nice if a lot of those vids migrated to YouTube !

Yes!! If I was really good that day, I was allowed to stay up and watch :)
It was hosted by WHTT DJ's correct?

>>Robert Ellis Orrall

From Lynnfield. He also had a minor country hit or two; I remember playing "Boom! It Was
Over (Just Like That)" also "A Little Bit Of Her Love"

Wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Ellis_Orrall ) lists "I Couldn't Say No" as hitting
#32 on the Hot 100 chart; the two country hits I mentioned came in at #19 and #31
on US country charts

"East Side Girl" the Stompers
"Physical Speed" Private Lightning
"The Girl With The Curious Hand" Digney Fignus
"Voices Carry" Gang Green
"Only A Stranger" Axminster
"Do You Love Me?" MASS
"Life Sucks...Then You Die" The Fools
"She Makes Me Feel Big" The Fools
"Do Wah Diddy" The Fools
"Tie Your Mother Down" Straw Dogs
"Loaded" Run 21
"Mutha" The Dream

...and the list goes on.

I loved local music. What the heck was that Ultra Blue song that got played for a while

Del Fuegos?

I remember the Del Fuegos had a hit in the 80's or 90's with Don't Run Wild. I think the album was called Boston, MA or something.

and does anyone remember The Stools?

I don't remember that one, but I do recall Kiss & WHTT playing "I Still Miss You" by them.

wasn't "Dream On" by Aerosmith a local hit in early '73 but didn't become huge nationally until '76 or so, when it was re-released?

Straw Dogs! Originally the FU's and their vocalist is playing out again doing those songs with different musicians.

Got one, how about the Nervous Eaters - When I Talk to Loretta

Mission of Burma's "That's When I Reach for My Revolver" (was covered by Moby) and "Academy Fight Song" (was covered by R.E.M.).

Human Sexual Response's "Jackie Onassis".

Was "So You Ran" by Orion the Hunter a national hit?

I remember WCOZ played it. But, again, as I was a kid at the time, no idea if it ever went "big."

Another one... "Doin' The Countdown" by The Drive. That song was GREAT!

Orion the Hunter made me think of "Face the Music" by RTZ.

How about "I Think She Likes Me" by Treat Her Right?

"Boom! It Was Over (Just Like That)" was also, fittingly, the last song on 105.7 WKLB (even if the call letters have lived another 12+ years since then).
