Oh yeah! That was HOT HIT VIDEOS when MTV broke on the scene, EVERYONE wanted their slice of the pie. NBC had FRIDAY NIGHT VIDEOS on very late-12:30(Letterman had the day off then) after Carson. I believe, they actually paid big bucks to debut Jackson's THRILLER mini-movie music video.
CHannel 7 showed HOT HIT VIDEO every day(!)at about 4pm before the early news-that was an hour show-this was in 1984. Bill Smith used to host that. I think the weekday one died off, but the weekend one kept on -on Saturday nites late, 11:30pm it was HOT HIT VIDEOS again, with Doug Alling and Cindy Balin. That was the 90 minute version, filmed at the Palace Entertainment Complex(torn down a few years ago after it became a seedy, run down hang out, it's now a LOwes or something) with all the old car props and stuff. They'd indeed do a local artist video. Both shows petered out around or before the time that WHTT Hot Hit Radio 103(now Oldies!) sort of went through a staggered format change, around 1986 to A/C that wound it up, eventually in the Oldies 103 in 1987.
RIght about this time-1983/4(?) V66 was born to give a UHF alternative to MTV which was like something you could only see if your friend got cable at *their* house. It was like your same friend with the color TV around 1969-70. Ah, the days. V66 was the home to alot of local artist videos, including the aforementioned New Man and Face To Face. In fact some of V66's videos were so obscure and crazy, you never saw them much on MTV in rotation. And then one day, after alot of success, much to,apparently, even the VJ's surprise...V66 was sold to HSN overnight.
