Well yes, "four times a day" is an exaggeration, but it seems like that.

And with your numbers (thanks BTW, they're amazing!) it's not all that far off.

"Once every 19 hours" might really be less than that if you factor in syndicated
and speciality shows: 6-7am Saturday (Elvis) and the Saturday night 7-12 disco
show where it wouldn't be played, not to mention most of Sunday as they do a
"KOOL Seventies Sunday" all day/evening starting at 8:00am.

Depending on the station...most major market CHR's spin their powers 50-80x per week.

The new CBS Houston CHR kicked off playing the powers about 150 times a week. Average is around 70 spins a week

Yes, Hispanic targeted CHRs like KIIS in LA definitely do that.

Some CHRs in Spanish also do that. One of the oldest, put on originally by Mike Joseph, used to play the #1 song about every 90 minutes and is now around the 70 to 80 spin cap. KGSX in San Antonio is also in the 70 spin range. Outside the US, hotter rotations are more common in Mexico and other countries.

11 spins in last week, or once every 19 hours, approximately. The week before it played 9 times.

The spins over the last 12 weeks have been 11, 9, 9, 8, 7, 9, 7, 8, 9, 10, 9, and 9 so you can see the range averages 8 to 9 spins a week.

Over the last 10 years, it has spun approximately 410 times a year, or about every 21 hours.

So it was on the high side of the mean last week, but well within the long-term historic range.

It never played 4 times a day in since 1998... I just checked.

Wow. That is sad.

Playing the same song every single day. For ten years. (And fifteen years or more before that.) What a joke.

No wonder people are sick of that song (and so many others.)

Stations that play the same 500 songs over and over should have their licesnses revoked. Waste of a frequency.

Listening to KRTH & WCBS online for past few days!


WCBS- ELO/Don't Bring Me Down, Paul Simon, Cliff Richard, Bruce Springsteen, Romantics and the strange/bad list goes on...are you kidding me?

KRTH- Doors/Love Her Madly, Elvis, O'Jays, Jose Feliciano, Steely Dan, James Taylor, Fleetwood Mac, Sam Cooke, Todd Rundgren and the good stuff goes on!

No contest...KRTH by a mile !

The problem, simply, is that there aren't enough of them.

So, no simple variety & themes on classic hits stations then.

You just like the same 502 songs to play again & again, with no other options. Boring!

No, those are the 502 songs that their audience has told them that they want to hear.
If there was a demand for "Hats Off To Larry" as well, it would be 503....but if there's not
its best to leave it off.

Probably not. You probably wear the same basic wardrobe that most people wear although if you went out
in parachute pants, platform shoes and a skinny tie it would certainly qualify as "variety".

I would say listening to KRTH every day would be like wearing khakis, a blue button down shirt, and a plain tie with tan loafers. Every single day.

White shirt? Nah. It doesn't test as well as the blue.

I would not go as far as saying WCBS is boring..KRTH a bit yes, for my tastes, but CBS for the themes and its song selection, make it sound like a classic hits station "having fun" with it's audience. And it's 488 songs or so seem to be a tad different week by week, even w/o weekend themes. They always seem to insert a "rare" song every so often, every week that KRTH just would never play. I guess, that's just the way it is!!

There are about a hundred or so that are on a slower than 7 day turnover that don't repeat every week, but on cycles of 8 to 10 days, which pretty much play every other week, or two out of every three weeks.

I know you're getting your data from some kind of program or database, but it just doesn't match what's on the air. There are just too many oddball songs (a Calendar Girl here, a Hound Dog there, a "Hold on Tight" by ELO there) for the list to simply be a KRTH-style auto-repeat 500 jukebox. Either that or they've picked 100 oddball songs to play.

Anyway, KRTH could easily play two or three less-heard songs per hour and still keep their fan base. I don't mean dorky novelty songs like "Convoy" or "The Night Chicago Died." Many people on this board imply that outside of the 500 song "tested" playlist (or 200 or whatever) all the other songs are as dated as parachute pants and sideburns. Not true. There are plenty of great old songs that may not score super high on some rating chart (which probably favors familiarity more than how much you'd like it) but are still good tunes.

Besides, LA oldies fans can't tune out anyway. They have no choice - there are no other oldies stations around. They could still play "Dancing Queen" and "Brown Eyed Girl" for the other seven or eight songs per hour to satisfy those who want the familiar, yet keep it from being so stale with more v-a-r-i-e-t-y. (And don't you dare say variety means heavy repetition!)

But by playing it so safe they probably scare off more listeners who are bored to death. Certainly more than would be scared off by an occasional non-Brown Eyed Girl/My Guy/My Girl song.

KRTH plays fewer songs that I go "eww" to when I hear them. In fact, I like.....really like, every song KRTH plays.

However, if I had to listen to a station all day long, I'd go with WCBS, because KRTH would get too boring. I'd rather hear a clunker or two in exchange for some tasty surprises. The theme days (turntable Tuesdays - awesome!) and weekends alone are enough to give them the edge. The DJs are also indeed "having fun" with the audience, while KRTH's are very fake and scripted (aside from Charlie Tuna.)

And of course the specialty shows are REALLY superb, but that is sort of a separate topic. KRTH has nothing in that area, except Beatles, which we already have plenty of on KLOS and KCSN Sunday mornings.
