Sony still making radios that only go up to 1600 on the AM Band

I was picking up some household items at Walgreen's earlier tonight and while I was there I checked out the electronics section to check prices on headphones. I saw a Sony Radio with an analog tuner and it only went up to 1600 on the AM Band. They had several of these.

While we don't have any stations above 1600 in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire or Rhode Island there are many stations located above 1600 elsewhere in the country. It's been more than 15 years since they opened up the band. Is it still called Expanded Band or X Band?

You may find that they will actually tune up to 1700 even if the printing on the dial ends
at 1600. I bought a transistor radio online which works that way. Perhaps because it
is also sold in countries where the band does not officially go that high.

Technically there are TIS stations and low powered* and of course pirates in New England above 1600

*--like the AM 1640 in Peabody MA that runs all PSAs; it will be used for emergency info if
necessary (they announce winter storm parking bans if needed for example)

I had a Hi-Bunsonic - I am NOT making that name up........

.......portable digital tuner that tuned all the way to from 390-1920 kHz. Not sure is was just some manufacturing oversight or indifference, but the box read 520-1720 kHz. Sometimes, I got a faint beacon or two below 520 kHz and even a pirate on 1730 kHz (playing techno.....)

I probably still have it somewhere.....
