South and Central Jersey Radio of the 70's

Be careful with that warfarin you're taking, Jay. Warfarin can be a very bad thing…as explained to us many years ago by Edwin Starr:

Warfarin…
it ain't nothin' but a heartbreaker

Warfarin…
friend only to the undertaker

Warfarin…
Huh…yeah

What is it good for?

Absolutely nothin'
Say it again, y'all

Ooooh, warfarin…
Huh…Good God y'all

What is it good for?

Absolutely nothin'

Do not chew or crush -
Swallow whole -

Frankly Harry, I have a thing called Lupus-Anti-Coagulent, thus causing me to have to be on the blood thinner forever. I even have what's called a "Greenfield Filter" in my body..to prevent clots from moving from my legs to my torso or above. It's like a catchers mitt. So far, not one ball has gotten past Elston as I call it. Thankfully.
And I appreciate the note from the administrator about the posts in question. I just think that sometimes it gets a bit heavy handed especially as the initial post in question was a response to something that was writen by another poster..in a legitimate way. That's what I have the problem with. I can see how the administators want to steer the conversations to "Radio"...but "RADIO is all encompassing these days, to include views of other things.. Radio's PLATFORMS are changing perhaps, but the free exchange of ideas shouldn't. Perhaps a friendly REMINDER of that would have been a bit less HARSH a decision, and I'm SURE the poster would have understood the mission of this board. But I hope that's what it was and NOT some vendetta to keep certain folks off this board. Look, that happens on a major board that we all read focusing on NY radio..and that ain't necessarily fair either.
So for the sake of EVERY one...let's lift any "bans" of certain people IF we can keep this about RADIO. And particularly JERSEY Radio. What I REALLY don't want to see are these dumb posts about "I picked up WQQQ at my home in Mayetta today. That's unusual. How many other stations did YOU pick up today from YOUR home?" See that's very juvinile and wastes space for folks who actually HAVE a brain, and want to discuss RADIO stuff in ALL of its forms and all of the arms that it has including occasional diversions into just how a board is run. Either this is a public forum or it's not! If there is abuse, TELL THEM, and most people will have a reasoned discourse about subject matter. It's that easy in MY estimation. Radio in NJ and elsewhere is in DIRE need of controversey to kick it up a notch. I think that's what the poster was trying to do...perhaps making some uncomfortable. And ya know, the people who HAVE the POWER to decide what goes and what stays should review what is TRULY offensive and what isn't. THAT'S subjective..and that's where I have the problem.
So once again..if we can just talk about RADIO in NJ, that's fine..but let's put some intelligence into the posts please? Some of us actually want to hear what others have to say...and add invaluable history and humor to an otherwise boring discusssion by geeks who live with their mothers and don't have a CLUE about what this business WAS about or IS about now. It's VITAL that we keep this line of communication open.

I...look forward to your long messages. They are...more
interesting than the other stuff posted on this board lately.

Tom -

What are the subjects you would like to see posters write about that you would consider interesting?

Are there any topics you would like to write about that you think would be of interest to those who read this board?

I ask these questions only because I like the idea of trying to make and keep this board informative, entertaining and relevant.

Some more names from the 70s,Loveable Mike, Gary Lane,Fred Sharkey,Phil Painter,Jim Knight,Bill Huf

Wow...some forgotten names there. Fred Sharkey left WMID to WFPG, then to WSNJ. After the FM moved, I have no idea.

Gary Lane (Levin) left WMID for Food & Beverage at Caesars, then moved to Hawaii.

Jim Knight (Gentleman Jim) left WFPG to WMID to spin Standards under Harry Sparks with Ed Davis and Don Williams. Succumed to Cancer. Loved his little 50's 4cyl Benz.

Who's Bill Huf? (just kidding). It's nice someone made some money in this business after all these years.

Jim Knight (aka James G. Knight) (aka John Hellman) came to town
in about 1972, doing middays at WOND. I don't think cancer took him,
he had heart problems, that's why WMID ran the American Heart
Association Radiothon in his honor for many years.

Loveable Mike ... Mike Harvey did 6 to 9 PM on WOND in the early
70's ... then over to WMID. The last time I ran into him he was
a Chiropractor working in Northfield. He taught me how to run
the board at WOND.

I've been translating both the Large One and El Famoso into English for several years now. It's the one thing for which a BA in Linguistics comes in handy. ::)

And I'll third the Record Handler's emotion. If you need proof, and you've got two-and-a-half hours to sit in front of your computer: http://www.bigjayandanita.com/scope.m3u.

Anita

Well, I didn't listen to the full two-and-a-half hours (I'm not that much of a masochist), but I did listen to the first 35 or so minutes (so I guess I'm a masochist with limits) and I must say those two sounded terrific. So kudos to two terrific and talented veteran New Jersey radio professionals - Pete Tauriello and Frank Lombardo :D

BTW, for you armchair aircheck analysts, if you're so inclined, check out the irony in the comments made at about 32:50 in. Also, if anybody is interested (and even if you're not a linguistics major) can you explain to me the reference to inches per hour made at about 6:20 in?

OK.. My self-imposed exile from the board is over. Harry. That was a very funny bit. A little long, but that's what I am. I was born this way. That aside, I will only respond to professionals on THIS board from now on. I will resist writing War And Peace each posting. And I promise to NOT be too inside. I want the world to know I ain't dead, (I almost was) and I am working feverishly to regain my foothold in the biz, before I become another Jackson Armstrong...dejected that no one would hire him EVEN though he was perhaps the best DJ (other than Ingram and Joey) of the rock era. Do you remember a guy named Bill Bauer? His air name was Bill Jeffries. He worked at WSLT,WMGM and WMID .

deff,

I've been trying to place Bill Bauer. The name sounds familiar, but that's about it.

I did work with a guy named Bill Bang...and that was his real name. Everybody on the station would always promote his show because it was so easy to do millions of bad jokes about his name.

He was very friendly on the air but his talents didn't go much beyond telling you the time and temp. He had an amazingly deep voice, but it was incredibly nasal. He always sounded like he had fingers stuck up both nostrils. (Come to think of it, that's why I would never shake hands with him and why I would always spray the pots and turntables before my shift.)

Does anybody know whatever happened to the melliflouos Bill Bang?

Or DEVON of WADB-FM fame (who worked at 11-7 Jersey Shore for about 45 minutes.. There was a voice who didn't know HOW to use it.

You left out Cliff Bakeley from WHLW, and the first three jocks, John Colure in the mornings, Jack Tracksler in middays and Paul Irwin in afternoon drive (thanks to Pirate Jim's website)..

How about WOBM-FM guys...Dick Allen, Bob Marek, Dick Gunton (went to Boston), Gary Cubberly (deceased), Rick McDonough, Greg Koziar (runs successful media ad company). Bill Slater another early name.. Man this is hurting my brain.

I will think of more.

Bill Bauer was Bill Jeffries on the air. He worked at WSLT,WMGM and WMID, He was a brash egotistical guy but weren't we all . He brought a kitten to work one night at WMID and got some grief about that. He gets on the air and says "Whats wrong with me bringing a kitten to work? A little p%$$* never hurt anyone" .This may be just a radio urban legend,I heard about it from somebody else. But Bill was the kind of guy that would do this. He worked in AC in the early 70s.

Thanks for the correction, Tom. You're right, of course. I have this RF/cancer thing in my head, as I've lost engineer friends to brain tumors/cancer. Alan Searfoss, Mike Venditti, others.

How about Jeff Ranz?

Now that I think about it, I remember Jeff becoming the afternoon news guy on WOBM after he left WMGM. However Jeff's style, voice and knowledge of music were really suited for the prog rock WNEW-FM type stations of that time. While he was at WOBM, he had applied for a job at a prog rock station in Detroit and he really thought he'd get it. As it turns out, though, they told him they wanted a female voice so they ended up hiring a girl. That was his spur to go out on his own and I kind of remember him opening his own production studio shortly thereafter, but I don't know how that turned out for him or what happened with him after that. He was a very cool guy, though.

Jeff Ranz was at WMGM in the early 70's doing middays.
I think he lived in Bayville. I remember he had a cool
little Opel Kadett.

Harry that was a post from Tom McNally a few weeks ago.. I remember that guy Ranz, but it was he at OBM-FM after I left 11-7 for either JRZ or WPST ?

And WE could write a book about PST/WHWH too. The characters there were incredible. Including the ghost in the building.

Remember stumblin' Preston Mason? Judi Muller went on to ABC News..she's still there after all these years.

Phil Painter...dead or alive?

Howard David is STILL big in Sports somewhere...read about him just the other day..got another new gig. That guy has 9 lives.

Is HOBLER still around? He wrote me the most lovely note when I left PST to go to WNBC...too bad Johnny Morris didn't do the same. He was actually ANGRY at me for going to NY!!?!??!! Herb on the other hand was happy for me. (Maybe he just wanted to get rid of me so I wouldn't say things like: "There's Fleetwood Mac and Dreams from Stevie Nicks...sounding like she's a sheep in heat"... Even Taylor didn't like THAT one. But I still use the line..because it was TRUE.

Young Doug James short time at PST (he actually was the ONLY night jock to either beat or tie George Michael on FIL while James was at Wibbage) is in Chicago I think...last I heard does voice-overs.

And from 11-7 Jersey Shore...Don Cobiella got RICH doing national spots for Coke, etc.. Still at it..does movie spots, etc.. He's does them in the style of the guy everyone makes fun of.. "In a world where evil wins over good"...etc...

Harry...either stop this thread or let's go full-tilt boogie trying to remember the names. You are more familiar with the deep south Jersey names...I know the Upper Shore names...and does anyone think that JLK, RLB, HTG are in SOUTH or Central Jersey? They ARE..but no one is POSTING about those stations' rich history of jocks and news folks.

Perhaps my friend Jeff Rafter can help us...but I'm not sure anyone from Greater Media is allowed to post on these weenie boards. Jeff has a million stories about HTG and JLK.

By the way, I THINK there's gonna be a story about ME in this SUNJAY's Asbury Park Press. I THINK..because I don't know if it was rejected as too controversial. But I bet if it DOES show up, it'll be HIGHLY edited. Gee..I wonder why? What..do I have lice or something?

There is some WLDB history at: http://mcnally.cc/wldb.htm

That site is nothing less than remarkable. Tom deserves a lot of credit for preserving that material and making it available to us.

I had no idea that WLDB was such an amazing operation back in the day. I only remembered it as a third-rate bizarre oddity. When and why did the station move from its studios atop the Senator Hotel (one of the area's largest and best-known hotels with a million dollar panoramic view of the World's Playground from the studio window) to a trailer that could barely fit three people in a vacant lot surrounded by weeds and who knows what else in a desolate part of what was then a dying city.

Also, did you see that announcing staff? They must've been paid a pretty good buck to be able to afford those snazzy suits they were wearing. Imagine the New Jersey radio stories Ken Mendelsohn, Dave Van Sant and Dick Brewer could tell. Now, are those classic New Jersey radio names or what?

Plus, does anybody know who the announcer with the stentorian tones was who said "Studios atop the Senator Hotel." That guy was network quality for sure. He sounded like he could have given Don Pardo a run for his money. Could that guy have been Don Wilson?

Classic stuff for shore.

The Senator Hotel became a nursing home, and WLDB moved over to
the Penn-Atlantic Hotel, which I know nothing about. I suppose the
studio trailer at the tower site wasn't a bad way to go, economically.
Contrary to what you may read on other history sites, the Bremmers
did NOT live at the trailer, they had an apartment in town. Leroy
left an open mike with a remote mixer feeding a phone line to an
amplifier in his home, so he could listen for burglars. After Leroy
passed away, Mrs. B would stay overnight in the trailer for security.
When she would go out of town, she'd pay the kids (announcers ?)
to keep the station on all night so someone would be there.

I'm sure the announcers in the pictures wore their Sunday best when the
photographers from RCA magazine came to do the article. The only
one I knew was Dave Van Sant, who was one of those political announcers
in Atlantic County for many years.

Funny story Jim Rodio of WRDR/WRDI(WNJH) fame told me ... when he was
a kid in the 50's he went to the Senator to see the Bremmers about a job.
He took the elevator, which still had an operator in those days, to the top
floor. As the operator opened the door, Jim heard Mr. and Mrs. B. yelling at
each other ... he asked the eleveator man if that was a common thing ...
(insert politically incorrect dialect here) "yes sir - it's like this every day sir"
to which Jim replied "take me back down" and that was the end of that.

Lupus Anti-Coagulent? Isn't that the guy who played the weightlifter-strong man on Mission: Impossible? (Or maybe he was the weekend overnight guy on WHTG) :)

Lupus Anti-Coagulent. He's the guy who did stand-ins for Satch when someone HIT him on the East Side Kids movies. Much like Lou Costello's brother Pat did many of the pratfalls for the very ill Lou. Lupus Anti-Coagulent is a distant relative of the all night guy on WHLW in the early 70's. You were thinking of the wrong station with an "H" in it. Louie, as we now call him, is also related to Mr. Bacciaglupe the vegatable man in Paterson.

HE did overnights not on the air, but stood watch at the transmitter site taking readings every half hour for WPAT AM in '54. He had a close eye on the common point reading. He died of an eye tumor from getting too close to the transmitter...or was it his DAY job where Stinky hit him one too many times? I can't remember.

I'm glad you ended your self-imposed exile from this board, Jay. I'm especially glad it only took you 9 days, because, ya see, the over-under number for you to start posting again was 10 (days)...and I took the under.

Now, if North Carolina beats UCLA Monday nite, I'll have a clean sweep ;)
