Southern California radio’s latest ratings offer surprises and a new No. 1

For those of you who can't get past the paywall, here are some snippets:

It was not a good month for alternative rock, with both Alt 98.7 (KYSR) and KROQ (106.7 FM) down compared with the last quarter. For September, Alt was at 2.3; KROQ at 2.0. Back in June, the stations had shares of 3.2 and 2.3, respectively.

As mentioned, KFI was the top AM station in town (3.8), and therefore has the top talk ratings in town as well. KFI’s competition? KRLA (870 AM) earned a 2.0 share, KABC (790 AM) had 1.1, and KEIB (1150 AM) had a 1.0. That means KFI had just slightly less than the total of its competition … not bad, not bad at all.

On the strength of the Dodgers, KLAC (570 AM) took top sports honors, with a solid 2.1 share. KSPN (710 AM) — which simulcasts its programming on KRDC (1110 AM) — was at 0.5. Repeat: 0.5. On two signals. Wow. Perhaps oldies on 1110 AM would work better? And perhaps some middle-of-the-road music combined with sports on 710? Just thinking out loud.

In regards to KSPN 710, there's two big problems that stand-out.

1. No live and local breakfast to start the day and encourage listener participation. If a person starts the day somewhere else, you're facing an up hill battle to get them to switch to you later in th day.

2. Schedule has been chopping and changing every few months of show. No chance for shows to build loyalty to their brand and timeslot. They keep doing it over and over again, and expect a different result each time - the definition of insanity.

People like to kick Audacy a lot, but they have four stations in the Top 10. So does iHeart,

Interesting that KOST-FM is this time the top rated station in LA. Usually Ihearts other stations KIIS-FM or KFI-AM would get higher ratings in Los Angeles. Usually Los Angeles is more associated with the CHR/Top 40 format as the top music station in the radio market and is associated for being the flagship station of Iheart sponsored concerts like KIIS-FM Jingle Ball or any Iheart Music festival in the Southland.

Not so sure how KOST beat KIIS this time though but I am curious on what lead to this.

KYSR had a 25-54 4.7 in June, but a 3.9 in May and a 3.5 in July. June was an aberration. Lat month was well within their range.

KFI wqas 24th in 25-54s, and KABC 32nd while KRLA was 37th. KFI has slowly gone from 8th in 25-54 in April to 24th today.

KLAC in 25-54 was 21st, KSPN wass 35th.

The 710 signal, soon to be made worthless with its new CP and site, is not worth investing money in.

As mentioned elsewhere, 710 has a CP to become an nearly worthless station since they sold the land where the transmitter is. At best, 710 will be a good ethnic station of some kind.

In sales demos, KIIS has been lower than KOST and, often, KBIG, for the last two years. KFI has been out of the top 10 in 25-54 since May and on a steady decline.

But it has trailed KOST and KBIG for most of the last 2 years or more. It does not matter; iHeart sells KOST, KBIG and KIIS as its "wall of women" and as long as the three are in the top 5 or 6 non-Spanish stations, they are fine. In September they were 4th if you exclude KLVE and KLAX, so they are doing fine.

KOST had a weak summer period, but they are almost always Top 5 in 25-54, and usually Top 3.

In recent books, KOST, KBIG and KIIS have all been, within the margin of error, in a virtual tie with each other in 25-54.

I figure KSPN probably won't make any significant programming changes 'till they are only on 1110 and 710 is bye-bye.

According to the 2021 BIA ranking, KFI is the #10 highest revenue station in the U.S. Despite KFI's aging demographics, it apparently has enough loyal advertisers. Finishing 24th in the 25-54 race was not fatal.

KIIS was #2, KBIG was #3, KFI was #10. Maybe we should take these rankings with a grain of salt. But it's interesting to note that KFI's revenues apparently beat all but two FM stations in LA, and were better than KOST, KCBS-FM, KTWV, KYSR, KLVE, etc. I would suspect 1070 KNX's revenues were also ahead of many popular FM stations with better demographics. I'm sure it helps that these spoken-word AM stations can run many more spots than FM music stations can.

Five of BIA's top 10 stations are in NYC and one each in Washington and Chicago. The Washington station, WTOP, is usually the highest earning station in the U.S.
