Sox trip to Japan threatened by player boycott over support salaries

(Pls keep on Boston board as it deals in part with broadcasts of these games, which may not happen!)

Red Sox threatening to boycott their trip to Japan if support staff (coaches, etc.)
won't be paid $40k in expense money. Right now (on WEEI) they're supposed to
be playing Toronto but the game is being held up as the team waits to hear
what MLB may do.
So this game, and the games in Japan, may not happen unless it's settled. (Think of
the $$ being spent on sending broadcast teams and other personnel that may be
wasted if these games don't happen...not to mention how fans who may be
flying to Japan to see these historic games--historic in terms of playing over there, etc.

Dale Arnold: "When they heard support staff wasn't going to be paid, they said it was the last
straw." Arnold also said that MLB has so much $$ invested in this they'll have to cave in...

Will Bud "Light" Selig step in?

Good for the red sox players sticking it to MLB...They really have no choice but to pay them or look completely embarrassed by not doing so. It's great to see the team not put up with this kind of BS

call me cynical..

but these players have been moaning non-stop about this trtip.

id like to think they were sticking up for the coaches.

however, the realist part of me thinks they were grasping at straws trying to find some possible reason not to go.

This was something that was a stipulation that was agreed upon between the Red Sox and MLB before the Red Sox agreed to play the game in Japan. According to all the news I heard around it, MLB was changing its mind on some of the agreements which included the staff stipends.

Good for the Sox for putting their foot down to MLB making them stick to their agreements.

it was mlbpa and mlb that made the agreement for both sox and a's players. since training staff and coaches are not unionized, they weren't represented in those discussions. sox players assumed that mlbpa included the coaches and trainers in the deal, but youk who's the sox union rep didn't ask enough questions...

just goes to show you once again who runs this league...donald fehr's whiney millionaires club.
