Spanish on 1080 9/22 @ 2150-2220Z IN North Texas

Any ideas? Listening mobile in Collin County Texas Saturday night around 9:50p and 10:20p local. Since I am within 35 miles NNW of the KRLD Garland Texas transmitter site and not in it's very slight null (2 tower 50K) I was surprised to find a Spanish signal under KRLD. At first my thought was a 9khz carrier but in listening there was no hetrodyne. In fact the interfering carrier was probably within 10hz of KRLD. The audio was listenable during program pauses on KRLD.
The interference was still in progress when I left the car...

Any thoughts???
Thanks

Jay Walker

Was it Spanish talk or Spanish music that you were hearing? If it was music was it mariachi type music or ballad type or something else?

I am weak with descriptions of Spanish musical styles, tempo wise it was up tempo, not ballad and the parts I heard were either instrumental or at least the musical bridge. The music did not sound like CHR style Hispanic music.

Reception of anything on 1080 at night is not a normal occurrence in my area. It is normal to hear nothing but full quieting at night on 1080. My tip off was the slight beat between carriers on 1080 which caught my attention. Even when 1080 is on ND with reduced power the signal is full quieting at my QTH even while mobile. The night time null for KRLD is of course WTIC.

Tonight I'll do a little recording of the frequency and see if I can sniff out an ID or slogan. Odd for this area. Pre IBOC I could hear depending on the direction of the Loop either 1070 KNX or 1070 KFDI.

It's very likely that what you heard is from Cuba, "Radio Cadena Habana." It's become somewhat of a regular here in East Texas near Tyler. In the past I've also heard XETUL "Radio Mexiquense," a somewhat low powered station from near Mexico City, but lately what's under KRLD is virtually all Havana.

JD Thank you. That's a first time for me living in the shadow of KRLD.
Must have been excellent band conditions, or just right anyway.

Any idea what power output/directional array Radio Cadena Habana is using?

Thanks

Most of the DX community believes that no AM in Cuba is directional.

There are no accurate power lists for Cuban stations, but, with few exceptions, the higher power transmitters are on the lower channels. However, they have gotten some Chinese equipment and are improving some facilities. A guess would be something in the 30 kw range if they are using one of the new transmitters.

Thanks David. It's been a long time since I was an active MW DXer.
