Spanish Pirate Station Out in Far Southwest Houston?

Can anyone provide some information on what appears to be a pirate station transmitting at 101.5 FM out in far southwest Houston?

My friend has told me that the format is Spanish Christian programming.

They seem to be well-organized and are transmitting for much of the day.

I hear it when I work on some afternoons near Bissonnet & 59 South near the beltway. I think the signal gets stronger near Bellaire and the beltway. They have been on for a while now. Im surprised they havent been nailed yet.

Sounds like an illegal Low Power FM

There are a bunch of Low Power FM's all over the state, but they're mostly in small and medium sized towns and rural areas.

Here's an up to date list of the FCC's authorized LPFM's in Texas, and that station at 101.5 isn't on it.

I'm guessing this Houston operation is one that didn't or couldn't get an FCC license, but went on the air anyway.

I noticed there is a LPFM @ 107.9 Licensed to Brookshire. If it is on the air, I'm sure it's getting mauled by KQQK.

KIXS in Victoria chews it up, too, during tropo ducting. Of course along the Gulf Coast that's often a daily event for a good part of the year (something I'm sure you're familiar with!).

It is my understanding that the FCC currently does not maintain offices here in Houston, so our city appears to be prime area for someone to install a pirate station.

This would explain why I occasionally hear an unlicensed Houston FM station pop up over the last few years.

Wrong! At least in the case of 101.5. Last couple of times I locked onto them on the S/W Freeway it was a hispanic preacher and he kept repeating "Bandito" or, Bandit-so I assume that what they call themselves. The station had good coverage. About 5 miles each direction from where I assume the tower is.

For those who are wondering, I think the tower, transmitter and studio are near or in the same place that the 95.3 pirate was broadcasting from before they went away

I got this from this thread http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/topic,61376.msg431731.html#msg431731

Can anyone refer me to other unlicensed FM stations transmitting out of the Houston area?

Juan already mentioned tht "bendito" means "bless" or "blessed" and not "bandit." In fact, the word "bandito" does not exist in Spanish; a "bandit" is a "bandiDo" with a "d" and not a "t."

It's another corruption of a foreign word, whether it was through advertising or biker gangs. There was a time when "Bandito" was commonly heard. Young'ns, ask the parents about this: www.youtube.com/watch?v=peHKsRsVYII For obvious reasons, the character was replaced: www.toonopedia.com/frito.htm Never mind that his successor was a caricature of an aging, womanizing, grumpy drunkard.

Okay, we were talking about pirate stations...carry on.

I just want to go on record as admitting that at the age of two, I chose Fritos because I could sing the Frito Bandito song. Since I was one of five kids and my mom got the multi-packs for our lunches, I had six or seven Frito Bandito erasers which came free with the case of snack-packs, although they tended to crumble. The erasers, I mean, although probably the chips, too.

Moral: Marketing works, sometimes. They give me heartburn at this late date, but I still sing the stupid song every time I dip on into that Frito pie because I can't help it (the singing or the dipping; it seems when presented with the opportunity, neither one can be helped).

P.S. A friend says the v.o. on that was a very young Cheech Marin. I disagree/challenge, but don't know the answer; I just don't think it's Sr./Mr. Marin. Anyone?

Frito Bandito Song? Cheech Marin?

I don't remember a song connected with the Frito Bandito, and I don't think Cheech Marin would have done it if there was a song. That was long before he and Tommy Chong started making movies.

Maybe your friend is thinking of a Disney movie in the 80s, in which Cheech was the voice of a street-wise Chihuahua. He also voiced one of the critters in The Lion King.

Can you still sing the Frito Bandito song? Share the lyrics with us. I'd really like to know because I honestly don't remember that commercial having a song.

(You know what they say about memory. It's the second thing to go when you pass 60. I forgot what the first thing was.)

Yeah. It was actually pretty mild by today's standards; still, it was determined to reenforce a negative Latino stereotype, so it disappeared in the early '70's.

Here's a good link from a collector. The character was created by Tex Avery and voiced, I've discovered, by none other than Mel Blanc.

Hey, I am not even pass 50 and I REMEMBER the Frito Bandito song/commercial (but then I remember other useless trivia such as Fireball XL5 and Clutch Cargo...ahhh the memories ;)
