I am never in New York, but happened to be passing through on my way back to Ohio today. I heard a version of the JZ hit with just Keys and a Piano. She pput different words in. Was this something she wrote after the fact?
I really liked it!
 
It's called ""Empire State of Mind (Part II) Broken Down"" on Alicia's solo album "Element of Freedom" and has been played on Adult Contemporary stations for months now. Suprised this is the first time you've heard it.
 
Interesting. I have not heard it anywhere yet. May be it's more of a regional hit?
