Sporting News Radio Moves HQ To Houston

Gow Communications, which owns Houston sports radio KGOW and is owned by David Gow (gee, who knew?) has purchased a majority stake in the media group that owns Sporting News Radio. The owner of the print publication, American City Business Journals, recently sold off the radio operation to Mission Media Group. Mr. Gow will become chairman of Mission Media, and subsequently relocate SNR's headquarters from Santa Monica to Houston.

Well, on the surface this seems like a good deal for SNR. They'll be run by a talk radio company, not some print company. Maybe, they'll expand programming some.

I read here they have 175 affiliates. Does anyone have a list of those affiliates?

I don't think we'll see the lineup get expanded. They seem happy with the limited offering they have. I hope I'm wrong. I wonder if Monty might not make the move to Houston.

I think Sporting News Radio's overnight and weekend hosts have many more affiliates than their daytime counterparts do. I believe most of the new CBS FM sports stations carry Sporting News during non-peak hours as well as some other sports stations around the country that program daytime and evenings locally. But the number of stations that carry Sporting News 24/7 is small.

Most station owners that start an all-sports station first choose ESPN if that affiliation is available. Second, it's Fox Sports. Sporting News is third. (Or maybe ESPN Deportes is third if your market has a sizable Latino population.) There are a few markets where there are three sports stations (Tampa, Phoenix, Salt Lake City and yes, Houston) so one of them is a Sporting News affiliate. And Sporting News is on Sirius/XM satellite 24/7.

I hope the change in Sporting News' headquarters doesn't mean staff members have to move to Houston. Houston is a nice city but these days radio staff can work from anyplace where there's a studio and an ISDN.

That can be said for ESPN Radio and Fox Sports Radio as well, but as we know even the lowest rated morning show will beat the highest rated overnight show, so in terms of listenership they're probably way below the daytime counterparts even with the higher affiliate count. Weekends probably get frequently preempted as well.

Just Sirius.

They could add on a LIVE morning show instead of reruns of Todd Wright's night show.
