Sports Radio 950 says they are carrying the Colts/Patriots game this weekend. Looks like it's the game of the year in the NFL. Glad there is an outlet in Philly to listen to it.

Correct. This should be a great game. Pats are giving 4 though? Hmm. Thought the line would be a little more than that.

OK. I'll take this to the sports forum. ;D

Great move by WPEN 950 AM to pick up this game from Westwood One.

Chunky V strikes again!

Too bad that the game starts at 4:15 ET and I won't be able to hear it after 5:30 on WPEN.
Glad to see that WPEN has put someone on the payroll trying to get them any press possible.

I was very surprised that I got on great signal on 950 all the way past Princeton, I flipped to WFAN and 950 was just as strong. Did they do something? One thing I noticed is 950 was on a longer delay than WFAN but signal was very strong.

WPEN has upgraded its facilities...it's now 25 kW-D, 21 kW-N, transmitting at night from WWDB's 4 towe setup in E. Norriton. Daytime, it runs the 25 kW from its original 3 tower site in W. Philly. Day signal easily goes past Princeton.

ATL, where in the market are you that you're unable to hear WPEN from the Foundry Road site? Personally, I love the new setup, and wish the station were broadcasting from there 24 hours a day. Previously WPEN was non-existent in King of Prussia at night. Now it's the second strongest signal on my nighttime AM dial (after KYW).

That nasty delay most likely is thanks to "HD" Radio. Unfortunately Greater Media is a big supporter/investor/cheerleader for the "technology".

Interestingly Dave, WPEN's daytime signal here hasn't gotten a single bit stronger since quintupling daytime power from the same site. In fact, if anything, it's a tad weaker. I'm guessing that's because it's now directional, whereas it was non-D before as 5kw.

George,
It IS due to PEN now being directional during the day. It's a wide cardioid with a very small lobe off the back to protect WROC Rochester NY and the now-50 kW WWJ Detroit, both co-channel. Google FCC AM Query, put in WPEN, and then click the link saying Electrical field strength plot under PEN's Daytime listing.

Hi George!
I stay with my in-laws when I have to do business in the Philly area which has become quite often lately!
They are in the West Chester 202/3 corridor.
Once 5:30pm hits they are spotty at best.
I have seen the improvement of the signal as I drive to NYC and sample their shows sometimes.
With the signal that they have I can't believe that they don't even register on Arbitron.
Two markets that I have worked in (and still do) Dallas and Atlanta have sports radio stations (The Ticket and The Zone) that bill huge amounts of money and have a comparable if not weaker signal. Those stations were the first sports entry into their markets, so they maybe have the legacy factor working for them. The Ticket is still ultra dominant and the Zone outbills 680 The Fan but trails them in the audience size and ratings in most day parts over the past few years.
