Sports Radio 96.7 and 1310 The Ticket

So this is not new. It looks like the change actually took place earlier in 2020, but I was listening yesterday and it occurred to me that an interesting adjustment was made. The FM signal has finally taken "first billing" in their name, booting the AM to second place (maybe third place eventually if they start the simulcast on 93.3).

It's not just on-air, but also on the website/logo/social media. It might seem like an afterthought, but considering the station's age and history starting on 1310, this is a significant change, at least in mindset.
 
KTCK is considered the oldest AM station in Texas, whose history even predates the establishment of WRR in 1921. That being said, for better or worse, only radio geeks care about that. FM gets all the attention these days. Many stations hide their age as they don't want to be seen as outdated and antique. Cumulus would probably dump 1310 if they could get ahold of a Cedar Hill FM signal.

Have there been rumors about placing The Ticket on 93.3?

The old WRR towers were a landmark next to White Rock Lake for many, many years.

This year, my family and I went into bubbles right before the holiday, and I drove to Tulsa to see my mom and sister (and BIL and nieces). I got to thinking how 970 in Tulsa was, at one time, KAKC and had nearly half of all radios in town tuned to it. For roughly four decades now, it has been a religious and/or conservatalk afterthought that almost nobody tunes in.

Of course, the same can be said for 1310 and 1190 in DFW. KLIF was last in the top-10 roughly 40 years ago when it was nearing the end run of its top-40 format. After Dallas and Ft. Worth were combined into the same market, the writing was on the wall that their days were coming to an end. At the time, there were only three AM signals that reliably covered both 24/7. That was really what killed AM more than anything else. AM signals were designed to cover cities as they were nearly 100 years ago. Their growth wasn’t predicted, and most AM's couldn't be easily re-engineered to accommodate that growth.

I doubt it. If you remember KTCK used to be on 104.1 in Denton County until Cumulus turned in that license in order that they could operate KESN. With KESN going back to Disney control, Cumulus has room for one more FM.

96.7 is pretty good on the Tarrant and Denton Counties side, and mostly fine in most of Collin. It is actually not so good in Dallas County. I'm not starting a rumor, just stating that 96.7 is deficient in the ares 93.3 could be strong in (they let their CP for downtown Dallas expire). 96.7 and a moved 93.3 actually make a lot of sense together. 93.3 has a decent cume, but no one seems to like it enough to listen long enough to move the needle on share.

Actually, if KGSR completes their downgrade into Austin, KLIF-FM might be able to move to Cedar Hill.

Not as a Class C or C1. First adjacents KMKT and KIKT (both Class C3) would be short spaced. However 93.3 as a C2 from Cedar Hill would fit. Don't think they would gain anything from this, though.

Correct, but with KGSR out of the way, it might fit as a directional C1. Susquehanna owned KIKT at one point in the not so distant past. I wonder if there was a condition in that sales agreement about a 93.3 upgrade.
 
The 93.3 signal is far more difficult to pick up than the 96.7 signal on every radio at my house in Plano. (and my car stereos)
I don't see them doing that unless they could make a significant improvement to the 93.3 signal.
 
I noticed also in the last couple of days the Ticket has been mixing in a new voice guy. Is Conrad out the door?

I don't know which part of Plano you are in, but your report is not surprising. However, 93.3 is substantially better than 96.7 in almost all of Dallas County and a good chunk of Tarrant. Additionally while smaller in population, it is also stronger in some of Johnson and virtually all of Ellis. I don't get over to Rockwall County very often, but I would imagine 93.3 would be substantially better there as well.

I used to get 96.7 well on my home receiver in Southern Dallas County. Now not so much. 93.3 comes in nicely here.
