Sports Radio Hosts On Talkers' 2011 "Heavy Hundred" List

Talkers Magazine has released its annual "Heavy Hundred" list:
http://www.talkers.com/2011hhindex.html

However, here are some notable sports hosts that ranked in the Top 100 this year:

34. Boomer & Carton (WFAN, New York)
36. Jim Rome (Premiere Radio)
38. Mike Francesa (WFAN, New York)
49. Mike & Mike (ESPN Radio)
67. Glenn Ordway (WEEI, Boston)
88. The Sports Junkies (WJFK, Washington)

(Also, WTAM/Cleveland's Mike Trivisonno at No. 75 also talks a great deal of sports on his show.)

There's also a sidebar labeled "sports talk" listing additional hosts.

Boomer and Carton ahead of Jim Rome?

I know the Talkers list has been criticized throughout the years, but this seems like a sign of demise when a local morning show is ranked ahead of him.

Cowherd is in the "best of the rest" list. But truthfully, he always came across to me as more style than substance, and that style was more or less parroting the ESPN company line, only very loudly.

No Dan Patrick, no Colin Cowherd. Don't know how they make the rankings, but this doesn't make sense.

I'll agree on Patrick. DirecTV bought his show, re-upped with Premiere, his affiliate count is as high as it's been, and his TV simulcast is being seen across multiple channels now. Plus, he's done it all without ESPN.

Gah. I made the comment about this list in the N/T forum, and here I am falling into their trap. It's just so hard not to criticize lists. :(

He didn't forget, Leebo. He's a busy man, successful, a go-getter. Time is his money, and exposure to him may cause sterility. His money man said all the money he makes would be better invested in his retirement account in a state without income taxes or placing side bets on the Super Bowl for kicks or in a sports car or a sharkskin suit so he can pick up hot 40-something babes or solidify the relationship with the wife (or both, he's not judging) than in getting on the Talkers list. Besides, more people see his grill on ESPN5 than on that list, outside of the internet bulletin boards, which he doesn't read except to make fun of people. Did he mention P90X or that he used to know Jerry Tarkanian and he worked in tv when he got out of college because he applied himself?

LOL....... that was good.

Not as much as in the past.

For those who don't hail from Cleveland, "Triv" was a radio novice who got his first on-air job - as classic rock WNCX/98.5's morning sports anchor - because of his being a regular caller/irritant to sports talk legend Pete Franklin on then-WWWE/1100. His longtime nickname "Mr. Know It All" was a slam by Franklin, but it instead became a badge of honor for "Triv".

After WNCX canceled their local morning show to bring in Howard Stern in 1992, "Triv" joined then-WWWE in 1994, assuming Franklin's old job as "Sportsline" host in late 1994. He then moved to afternoon drive when WWWE reverted to the WTAM calls. "Sportsline" became "The Triv Show" in 1998, and it's been a mix of libertarian talk and sports ever since.

I would consider his inclusion on the sports list surprising. On the general talk list? Not at all.

Sure. ESPN Radio is on some pretty weak stations, especially in big cities. WFAN has a lot of influence.

And this is a radio list. Just because they have a TV show shouldn't give them any more juice on the radio.

Yes, yes you are.

The talkers list is kind of a joke, obviously there's no real methodology to it--strictly an opinion based list. I've certainly ranted a time or two about the list; naturally Howard Stern should always be #1 on this list--most modern talk (or hot talk) and even sports talk wouldn't be what it is where it not for his pioneering of the industry. Obviously, national or regionally syndicated shows should be ahead of local shows if it's an OBJECTIVE list of "heavy hitters", how would a New York based show be ahead of a show on 200 affiliates?

To circle it back around, I can't stand Colin Cowherd at all, not simply just because he tells us how much better he is than the rest of us "role players" all the time, but his voice, opinions and lack of sports knowledge make him an unfit national "talent". All of that having been said, he should still be on the list ahead of any local sports show, period. National > regional > local -- that's the hierarchy, too bad Talkers Magazine didn't get the memo.

And by "sports anchor", you mean "guy who read the Plain Dealer's sports section on the air". :D

Triv still talks about "sports", but only in very general terms, and only when it's on his mind. It's really a show more "about nothing" these days...just general banter between Triv and his cast, comments on odd news stories, and occasional forays into criticizing local politicos and leaders.

I am inspired by Colin Cowerd. He is religion to me. He lifts me up to higher levels every radio show.

KM- Interesting you should bring up Stern as the No. 1 all time talk show host.

There are many things I believe one can credit Stern for, such as making lesbianism acceptable, but as far as the top talk show host of all time . . . sorry, gotta stick with Rush here.

I've noticed, social lefties tend to champion Stern in this debate, but really, there is no comparison. Limbaugh is on in every market, Stern is still taboo in the vast majority of markets in this country (not that I think he should be). Limbaugh has shaped all of political talk radio, and while you mention Stern as a hot talk pioneer, I would say that hot talk is a struggling industry whereas political talk rules the airwaves.

Limbaugh saved AM, Stern can't even get ON AM! Stern was carried on maybe 10 percent of the number of stations Limbaugh was in "The King of All Media's" syndicated heyday.

A ton of lefties will come on and try to discredit Limbaugh whenever they can. But the man has been a major influence in American politics and continues to be, whereas Stern's foray into influencing politics has always resulted in failure, be it Jim Moran or George W. Bush.

How can one espouse Rush Limbaugh and not see the greatness of a Colin Cowherd. Colin is brilliant in every way. Sharp witted and intellectually stimulating. He is the greatest conservative I've ever heard speak.

Well, perhaps because Rush Limbaugh's thoughts are his own, and Colin Cowherd merely parrots the ESPN company line.

And by doing so, Cowherd is clearly NOT a conservative!

And here, he's on for a couple of hours on a station you might be able to pick up if you're driving down Euclid Avenue on Cleveland's East Side.
