Sports radio moves in Huntsville

Interested on thoughts about the recent shake up in Huntsville Sports Talk radio.

WZZN 97.7 The Zone is now ESPN Radio. In the process removing Cubelic & The Kid (Cole Cubelic, former Auburn center and Matt Mitchell aka Casio Kid of Rick & Bubba fame) from the morning slot. They canned Casio and moved Cole to afternoons and now tape delay Thom Abraham, syndicated out of Nashville. Meaning now ESPN Radio shows up until 3pm when Cole comes on.

WUMP 103.9 The UMP is now part of the Jox Radio Network including Paul Finebaum. Everyone seems to think hes leaving Cox after this year, so wondering what WUMP was thinking with this move.

Most of all in this midst of all this switching around is that Huntsville has no local morning sports talk show now.

Thoughts?

The Ump will become a CBS sports radio affiliate when they launch it in January so isn't changing to Jox pointless anyways when you're just going to change again soon? It's a shame too that there is no current local sports morning show. Maybe that's just temporary until all this switching is complete at The Ump.

I knew 97-7 The Zone would jump on the open ESPN affiliate opportunity. They would've been crazy not too. Does anyone know if they plan to try to pick up rights to Auburn or Alabama football? I don't see The Ump ever giving up Bama football. They've been the Bama station for YEARS, but one would think it'd be mighty hard to have a successful sports station in Huntsville if you arent carrying one of the two teams games right?

Didnt know that info about CBS Sports. Wondering what kind of lineup it will offer. I would love to see WUMP go back to a local morning show. They had some greats in the past; Doug Franz, Matt Perrault, Dan Back, Thom Abraham, etc. I wonder if this means that its a given that Finebaum moves to CBS Radio Network...it would be hard to introduce your audience to that show then yank it away 4 months later.

I could see The Zone making a play for Auburn or possibly even Titans football. I agree with you, theres no way WVNN/WUMP lets Bama football get away. The Zone carries Army now, but you gotta think thats just a stop gap until they can land a big local name.
