Sports Talk Radio vs. Sports Podcasts

I know that there are several sports podcasters on the internet, myself included, and we only do 10 to 60 minute shows at least once a week, but are we collectively gaining ground on "the big boys" of AM & FM like Jim Rome, Dan Patrick, Mike & Mike, Tim Brando, and Tony Bruno?

I know you've heard at least one of those guys at some point, but not me, so if you want to compare me and any other sports podcasters to those "popular guys" go to http://www.podomatic.com and search for the sports shows...you can find mine at http://fiveminutestogo.podomatic.com

I listened for a few minutes..decent voice but doesn't sound authentic which usually creates credibility problems with audience and yada yada...

My main point is tell me who is paying for your podcast and that will answer your above question?

A. Right now, it's NOT about the money. The episodes of my podcast are free to listen to. Now in the future, I may start selling airtime, so that's when money may come into play.

B. I'm doing the podcast because I like to talk about sports, and hopefully one of my random listeners will discover me like the "non-baseball playing" Ted Williams was discovered on the streets. It's been hard getting a "full time gig" around Nashville, TN because 1) there's not much available and 2) I'm black, and if you don't know anything about the South, whites don't want to admit that some blacks are better than them at some things, like radio!

C1. I don't know what you mean by authentic. If you mean my production value, you probably know I don't have the best equipment at the moment. It's hard to get new & good equipment when you're on food stamps. I'm just happy to be broadcasting, and hoping for a big break in the near future. It's just like NASCAR. The underfunded NASCAR teams just getting by like be out there because they love to race, and they need a good finish or two in a big race to get sponsors on the side of their cars & trucks so they can race some more.

C2. Now if you mean my content's not authentic, I don't have a wife, kids, and I don't play golf either, so I'm not going to waste hours of time talking about that like the "local yokels" and even some national hosts. These guys need to focus on sports and not my wife did this yada yada, kids did this yada yada, hitting it into the trees 20 times to shoot 89 yada yada! On Five Minutes To Go, I get straight to the point of what's going on in sports, and jam it all into a show that's AT LEAST 5 minutes long, but not too long...people have very busy schedules, so you take out the liners and stuff and you've got a 5 to 15 minute podcast, depending on what I need to talk about.

I'm glad you listened, and you need to head to my site to listen again, now that you know the who, what, where, when, and why concerning my show.

My next "full" episode of Five Minutes To Go is on Friday, but starting today, I'm doing a spinoff: Some mini sportscasts during the week that I'm dubbing "The 60 Second String".

Remember to not judge a book by it's cover...

No..I just meant it sounded like you were altering your voice..like going the "radio voice" route. I think that works for top 40 but for me at least, genuine works better for sports talk.

I would work on securing outside employment first while trying to improve your craft. There's more talented people out there who go broke putting any trust in this industry.

Your method of keeping it short and to the point is a good one. But honestly, I'd use that time to actually spit more opinion on trending sports topics--or sports stories you think need more attention. The more compelling you are, the more original your viewpoint or approach, the less 'company line' you have to toe--the better off you'll be. I'd leave the sports scores for the sports websites.

In fact, I would stop looking at what you're doing as an audition for a potential sports radio gig (even though sports talk radio could definitely use a lot more 'color' in its ranks). Make "5 Minutes to Go" YOUR platform to shine, your spot for creative freedom that others can discover and enjoy.
