New York
WLIE-AM/Islip (Nassau-Suffolk)

BUYER: Starboard Media Foundation, headed by President Mark Follett. Phone: 312-588-0167. It owns 18 other stations. This represents its entry into the market.

SELLER: Long Island Multi-Media LLC, headed by Managing Member Stuart Henry. Phone: 631-243-5400

This has got to be the biggest station purchase ever for Catholic radio. Their revenue model must be working or its a huge leap of faith or donation.

Didn't this used to be the CCM station WLIX? If so, how funny is that?<P ID="signature">______________

Same signal, different location. "Christian 54, WLIX - Long Island's Christian radio" was located on Main Street in Bay Shore. Ironically, the station was then located directly in front of a real estate office whose unusual phone number was emblazoned on its building in huge black numbers: 666-6666. :)

IIRC, the sale to This Week Publications led to a call letter change to WLUX [as in Luxury, or DeLuxe], w/ former WGSM legend Joe Roberts as PD. Upgraded facilities were built at the front of This Week's office in Farmingdale, on Smith Street. Bruce Barlowe was morning man, w/ an airstaff which included ex-WGSM staple Jim Ferguson, & WLIX alumni Mary Perez [also of "Mary & Marty in the Morning"/Love 96-WLVG, & Magic 94.3-WMJC], actress Addie Triolo, & the delightful Gary Deveau. Music from the Standards/Nostalgia genre was featured, similar to the "Music of Your Life" format which it preceded. They also brokered time to shows, including pro wrestling talker "Between the Ropes."

Somewhere down the line, letters changed to WLIE for "Island Talk 540," & the station moved to Deer Park Avenue in Deer Park. The morning drive teamed up David Weiss [ex-WALK Breakfast Club] w/ Tracy Burgess [Imus/WFAN, heard for years on WBAB mornings]... w/ Country 94.3-WMJC's Amanda Clarke eventually replacing Tracy. The local talk format was deserted for Business Talk Radio, but I think there are others on this board who are a little more knowledgeable on that era...

WLIE has had a tough road. I grew up not far from the station. It started life a a pop music station WBIC...then to WLIX Drake Chenault Hit Parade...then religious, then "live jocks" standards as WLUX...then "live & local" talk as WLIE (spending big bucks, too), now back to religion. Good frequency...540 AM.

From the Long Island Radio History website...

Awarded to Islip after a long battle, WBIC went on in 1960 as 'Big Signal Radio'. The first format was Top-40, then MOR with Lee Murphy as PD (later of WINS fame). Mitch Lebe also worked there while it was still WBIC. Other formats included Beautiful Music, Top 40 and a religious format from the 1980's through the early 90's. In the mid 1960's, WBIC dropped it's calls in favor of WLIX. ...

Anyone else hear the Relevant Radio pledge drive at the end of August / early September?

The RR revenue model must be working, during the pledge drive, Drew was talking about RR's long-range plan to get RR on the air in the 50 state capital cities, and on the air in "X" amount (I don't remember what "X" was) of the Top 10 or 20 markets in the U.S.

Sounded a little ambitious to me (it was a long-range plan afterall) - but I like to hear the RR revenue model is working and RR is expanding.
