Starting December 1st Cat Country 98.1 won't be the only game in town

Good news to fans of real country variety in RI as Boston's WKLB moves to 102.5 and will be heard throughout most of RI. All I can say is it's about time we had a another country station in the area, one that played more than just "today's country hits" a phrase they say over and over again on WCTK until you want to rip your radio right out of your car if you're a classic country fan. KLB plays a better variety of country that includes more gold from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. They also have Sunday Morning Country Oldies. Well classic country fans, your ship will be coming in on December 1st as Classical 102.5 WCRB moves to 99.5 and 99.5 WKLB moves to the 50,000 watt equivalent signal of 102.5 FM. Let's welcome WKLB with a big YEE-HAH!!!!!!!

102.7 will block sum of that YEE-HAH!!!

I'm not sure they'll make any kind of a dent in WCTK's numbers, especially with we country listeners being loyal. I haven't heard enough of WKLB to even know how much classic stuff they play, but have heard the Sunday morning show coming back from the north country at times. Still I really welcome another country signal in the market since I have a couple of presets that are ripe for removal & WKLB is going to be there. I think The Fox in Worcester will probably go since the format is redundant from the point of view of my listening habits & there are no jocks. Still I spend a lot of time in the car Sundays & it'll be good to hear country music when WCTK has Nascar on.

I also have to wonder how much of an audience there is for classic country other than the obvious hits. I don't fault WCTK for being modern country. They're the only country station in the market & are not playing to an audience who grew up with the format. Time will tell, but WCTK is competing with other formats & doing a good job at it. If you call for Charlie Pride or Tammy Wynette on a request hour you'll hear it. They just aren't about to program artists like that regularly.

WCTK does a good job 'Playing Todays Country Hits'. And they do play some old country as well (80s-90s).
It works well for them. Why Change what ain't broke??? Now if they only get Big John Bina for mornings!

Just remember Cat Country.....THIS AIN'T TEXAS! IT'S THE NORTHEAST AND WE DO THINGS DIFFERENT HERE! JUST BECAUSE IT WORKED THERE DOESN'T MEAN IT WORKS HERE!

Cat Country will keep winning as long as everybody else keeps f'ing up

The move of WKLB to 102.5 may cause a very minor dent in WCTK's numbers, now that there's another choice. But, in my opinion having listened to both stations, WCTK is a better station all-around. WCTK is more upbeat, more current (but not afraid to visit the occasional nugget from decades past), and has far fewer commercials. The WKLB spotload can reach up to 15 minutes per hour at times, which I think is way too much. 10 minutes per hour, in my opinion, is pushing it. WCTK typically gets the highest ratings out of the Providence area stations in the Boston Arbitrons, while having probably the weakest signal out of the WPRO/WSNE/WHJY/WBRU/WWBB/WWLI bunch. WCTK is putting out a very good product--probably because they're owned by Hall, not a corporate giant.

WKLB really does not play a lot of gold outside of the classic country show Sunday mornings. They do air an 80's/90's recurrent or two per hour, but you're not going to hear a lot of Tammy Wynette or Patsy Cline on the new 102.5.

I'm in Massachusetts and listen to both WLKB & WCTK. While they both play a nice mix, WCTK plays a better selection of more current music in the afternoon (with Robbie). The WKLB afternoon ride home show (3-7) plays waaaay too much music from the 80s. I've been spoiled with both, I hope 'CTK listeners will give 'KLB a chance .. it's been really nice to have the choice. :)
