It is also interesting to note that while TSL is on the decline, overall cume is still well over 90% per week. Also, I read a study (might have been RAEL or RAB though) that said that people with satellite radios still spend more time listening to terrestrial radio. The audience may be eroding, but not at a disasterous pace, and some game changing, winning ideas could stem the tide somewhat.
Also, Cramer neglects to mention the other part of the satellite puzzle. Other than local traffic, there is no opportunity for local advertisers on satellite radio. So they are competing for listeners, but not really advertisers at this point. I would be more concerned with Wi-Fi becoming prevalent in cars than satellite, but that is a subject for another thread. Satellite (or wifi for that matter) can threaten unimaginative talk and music formats and steal some listeners, but localism and creativity still favor terrestrial radio. Every piece of news research I have ever seen lists the top three viewer interests as Weather, Breaking News, Coverage of the Area Where I Live. Terrestrial has the edge in 2/3 of those. Yes, I recognize that news is inherently older skewing and radio needs to establish its place with the younger demos, but that is where I leave the game changing, winning ideas called for above to minds greater than mine.
And yes, it was pretty funny that Entercom's biggest fan managed to turn a faint compliment from Cramer before he got to his main point into a damnation of Entercom and its CEO. Perhaps Brian is preparing a post that links Jason Wolfe to HGH...can't wait until he blows the lid off another WRKO scandal with his reliable sources and spot on analysis.
