State of Tampa Bay radio in general (and classic rock in particular)

Hi! I'm posting from Boston because I noticed that Cox Radio has three stations basically broadcasting the same format, namely classic rock. For those wondering, 80s and classic hits fall under the classic rock umbrella. I'm going to put a Boston radio perspective on what I imagine many of the following stations sound like.

WPOI - Using Boston's WBMX (on Friday nights) as an example, this Cox station is probably AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Guns'N'Roses, Van Halen, Motley Crue, Poison, and the like.

WXGL - Using Boston's WROR as an example, it's the usual AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Hendrix, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses, The Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd, and of course "Free Bird" and "Stairway To Heaven."

WHPT - Using Boston's WZLX as an example, it's the usual AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Hendrix, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses, The Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd, and of course "Free Bird" and "Stairway To Heaven."

WSUN - Using Boston's WBCN as an example, it's the usual AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Hendrix, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses, The Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd, and of course "Free Bird" and "Stairway To Heaven."

WRBQ - Using Boston's WROR as an example, it's the usual AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Hendrix, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses, The Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd, and of course "Free Bird" and "Stairway To Heaven."

WXTB - Using metro Boston's WAAF as an example, it's the usual AC/DC, Aerosmith, U2, Hendrix, Van Halen, Guns'N'Roses, The Who, Elton John, Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Pink Floyd, and of course "Free Bird" and "Stairway To Heaven."

And people are going to write that there's no room for either classic disco and/or mainstream oldies stations? (FYI, I'm 44.)

WRBQ does play some of those artists - fleetwood mac, boston - no ac/dc, van halen, jim hendrix or U2.

As for disco, Q105 has the friday and saturday night dance parties with jack and angie. They play all that stuff and by request.

In my opinion, Scott Robbins did the best disco show on 107.3. I forget what the call was then, but I think it was called Coast. All 70's. He was Denny Terio behind the mike.... May Scott rest in peace in that big disco in the sky....
Anyone remember when he flipped WHBO to all disco all the time on April fools day once. That was really funny.

Oh yeah... Disco 1040... and they kept it up for hours... propms, contests and the like... I was still working locally in bradenton / sarasota market, and even I got calls from friends who were listening to them when they flipped asking ME what was going on...What a GREAT April fools joke...

I worked down the hall on Warm 94.9, opposite Scott Robbins' show on 107.3. And yes, the station was then called, "Greatest Hit's of the 70's...Coast 107.3." At the time, Cox also owned 620 WSUN and if you called the switchboard, the receptionist would answer, "Warm...Sun...Coast!"

Scott Robbins was great. He was a good friend. I lamented his passing. But truthfully, even when he was at WCOF, he wasn't happy. He'd talk to me a lot about the early days of radio, WHBO, etc. I remember telling him once, "Scott, you're just playing NEWER oldies now, than you played on WHBO." He seemed to appreciate that. I know Scott was a free spirit, he didn't like the restrictive nature of the FM format.

I also remember Scott getting sloshed on the radio a couple times during the holidays just to show how impaired one could get. He would have a cop on the air with him that drove him home afterwords, but by the end of his shift, you could tell he was getting smashed.
