Stations that ran with the Neil Damond edition of "I'm a believer"

I never knew the Neil Diamond edition of I'm a Believer existed because anytime this song is discussed its either the Monkees edition that was originally played in the 1960's and played again for oldies stations in the 1990's.

Or now the Smashmouth edition that originally ran on CHR and Hot AC stations in the 2000's and getting attention again on Classic Hits stations in 2023 because Smash mouth's Steve Harwell is deceased.

Has there ever been stations that aired the Neil Diamond edition of I'm a believer when the original came out.

The original came out in 1966 and peaked at the end of that year. Diamond's version was included on his second album a year later. So they weren't contemporaneous, and Diamond's version was never a single. Perhaps by design. It's possible that the Monkee's recording of the song included a certain amount of exclusivity. Then again, Diamond was not yet the star he would become in the 70s.

Was Diamond considered more of a regional artist in the mid-'60s? I remember songs like "Kentucky Woman" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show" (No. 22 peak for both) getting a lot of airplay in Boston. Even "Sunday Sun" (No. 68 nationally) was familiar to Top 40 fans there. Did it take a while for Diamond to catch on in the South, Midwest and West?

He was on a small label: Bang Records. They didn't have the muscle to get his songs national exposure. Diamond's only hit at that time was Cherry Cherry. Then the president of the record label died. Diamond didn't really start having national success until he changed labels to Universal. Then he put out Sweet Caroline.

Heres another song that had its origins in the 1960's and had a first stint of success when Four Seasons originally ran with the song for one of their albums. Then it got some play again when Smash mouth covered this in the late 1990's and got some attention into the 2000's. I never knew the Four Seasons edition ever existed . I always remember the Smashmouth edition of this song but then again its a median demo thing though.
