It was reported a few days ago by Bloomberg that Disney, Amazon, Apple, and YouTube are in talks to take over local DTC rights for NBA teams dropped by RSNs (Bally Sports and ATT SportsNet), now CNBC is reporting that Scripps, Gray TV, Nexstar, and Sinclair are in talks to take over broadcast rights to NBA and NHL teams dropped by RSNs.

Ironically, Disney is who sold the rights to Diamond. They got the RSNs as part of their purchase of the Fox studios.

Owning an RSN makes sense when it's part of an overall media or sports operation. Much less sense as a free-standing ad-supported business. That's why it's bankrupt.

Didn't Sinclair have those rights after the original sale.
 
One of the only reasons we've remained with Comcast is because we have 2 Bally Sports RSNs here which, between them, carry our NBA, NHL and MLB teams and both are included in our current cable subscription. If Bally Sports goes away and we need to pay a streamer to see the games, our decision to cut the cord with Comcast will be a quick and easy one at that point.

Would adjust your plan that retains just the internet? Are you sure the RSN is included? Or is part of an optional sports package? Because my RSN is part of an optional sports package, for which I pay $10/month.

We have Google Fiber as our ISP and it's included in our HOA fees.
Regarding TV, If we would consider subscribing to the Bally Sports RSNs outside our our Comcast subscription, we'd pay $20/month for one of the Bally channels or $30/month for both so one of the reasons we've kept Comcast as that overall it's cheaper since they include both Bally RSNs. If Bally no longer carries our major league teams, we'd probably pay for whichever streamer would allow us to watch them, and then dump Comcast in favor of YouTube TV or similar for the other stuff we'd watch.

That won't happen here in Denver as Altitude TV is owned Kronecke Sports & Entertainment which in turn is owned by Stan Kronecke (Who owns the Nuggets & Avalanche)

TRANSLATION - If the streaming companies want to carry the Nuggets & Avalanche, they;re going to have to add ALL of Altitude TV

Otherwise, THE ONLY way we're going to see them on TV *Given the current dispute with Xfinity) is on Satellite TV or when they're on ESPN Plus

Many NBA teams have not been announced yet. For sure Phoenix Suns and Utal Jazz are going over-the-air. On the NHL side Vegas Golden Knights are going over-the-air. L.A. Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, St. Louis Blues, Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, and Nashville Predators have announced they will continue on Bally Sports. I believe Arizona Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars, and Tampa Bay Lightning have not announced if they will continue to air on Bally Sports or if their games will air somewhere else yet.

New York Post did report last week Diamond Sports made a take it or leave it offer to unprofitable NBA and NHL teams to reduce broadcast fees by 20% or be dropped with a deadline of this past Saturday. So we should find out soon enough.

I wonder if the sudden collapse of the RSN model will affect contracts that free agents will be offered during the MLB off-season (beginning in November) and the 2024 NBA and NHL off-seasons. Will the teams that own their own RSNs and streaming operations (YES, NESN, SportsNet NY, etc.) be the only ones able to win bidding wars for the big-money free agents? And if, say, Shohei Ohtani finds his market tops out at $250 million instead of the $400 million he and his agent are likely expecting, will the players union be whipping up a "collusion" complaint to take to court?

I have not seen what the Stars are doing, but the Mavericks are remaining on Bally Sports for this season.

Speaking of which, I just noticed that ESPN+ is raising its monthly price by $1 later this month, from $9.99 to $10.99. Still a bargain, IMO, but I'd imagine the price hikes will come more frequently now.
