Stephanie Miller Takes Over Bay Area AM Drive - Local Show Dropped

Al Franken also gets hour one cleared.

Quake/SF Expands Stephanie Miller In AM Drive
CLEAR CHANNEL Talk KQKE-A (960 THE QUAKE)/SAN FRANCISCO expands its carriage of STEPHANIE MILLER's JONES syndicated show from 6-7a to 6-9a, starting OCTOBER 2, with AIR AMERICA RADIO's AL FRANKEN expanding from 10a-Noon to 9-Noon, replacing the local 7-10a show with former Mayor WILLIE BROWN and comic WILL DURST, who remain on the staff for special appearances.

The local morning show with a comedian (Will Durst - spots for his comedy recording run on the AAR network feed) and a former San Francisco mayor did not appear to give Clear Channel's KQKE a ratings boost (the station has lost one-third of listeners since the Spring book in the number four market). KQKE is the poorest performer among major market progressive talk stations on the West coast. This is a definite coup for Steph and another sign she could be progressive talk's "killer app."

That was worst local liberal talk show in the country. Too bad they had to replace it with a syndicated show. It's going to be hard for KQKE to compete with KGO offering only syndicated product.

Before I reply to your post let me take a shot at one of the swarmy right wing wingnuts that have recently started to take over this board resulting in the loss of a lot good posters from the right and the left
Keys2 said regarding me. How about your incessant shots from the left? And how many of your posts do nothing more than express annoyance with points from the right? We all play the game, including you.

See keys2. Here's another incessant shot from the left.

Regarding your (FF's) post on local weekday hosts on progressive stations. Here are a few more.

Mr. KABC KABC Los Angeles
Scott
and Sims KCLC Sacramento
Charles Goyette KFNX Phoenix
Dave Ross KIRO Seattle
Ron Reagan KIRO Seattle
Dori Monson KIRO-A Seattle
Doug Basham KLAV Las Vegas
Nancy Stapp KOPT Eugene, OR
John Scott KQKE San Fran
Minn Matters KTNF Minneapolis
Ron Kuby WABC New York
Deborah Rowe WLS-A Chicago
Matt Gerson KXAM Phoenix
Jack Ellery WCTC Middlesex, NJ
Bev Smith WDBZ Cincinnati
Lincoln Ware WDBZ Cincinnati
John Williams WGN Chicago
Lizz Brown WGNU St. Louis
Arlene Violet WHJJ-A Providence
Howie Barte WHJJ-A Providence
Jim Gearhart WKXW Asbury Park, NJ
Bob Kincaid WWNR Beckley, WV
Leon Gray WWTQ Memhis

Bar, thanks for adding to the list.

Glad to hear Charles Goyette is back on the air in Phoenix (although some here claim he's libertarian and not liberal/progressive).
I left Doug Basham off my list because he is in syndication. He has (last I checked) maybe three or four stations, although moving to an earlier hour may have helped him pick up a few more. However, syndication does rule out local (Las Vegas in his case) content.
I left Peter B. Collins off my list of local hosts for the same reason.
I'd characterize Liz Brown and Bev Smith more as Urban Talk than Progressive talk but as with the Rev Al Sharpton or Michael Eric Dyson (both in syndication) a good case could be made either way.
I enjoy Jim Gearhart's show on New Jersey 101.5, although I'm not sure I'd call him progressive talk. Actually, I wouldn't call it an ideology-driven show at all. But I would recommend talk radio fans around the country check out this very unique station online, which may represent the future of talk radio (all local and more anti-political than political, with a lot of room for water-cooler and lifestyle topics).
Ron Kuby shares morning drive on WABC, New York with conservative "Guardian Angel" Curtis Sliwa. It's the best pairing of opposites IMHO since Siskel and Ebert. They avoid constant point-counterpoint bickering and neither caves into the other (Alan Colmes should listen and take notes).

Boston's AAR station does have a local-host show on Sunday afternoon but nothing on weekdays. "All politics is local"
especially in a place like Boston, but CC does not have a local show to counter the likes of Howie Carr
or Michael Graham (soon to be Jay Severin), etc., however word has it that once a tower move is accomplished,
they may soon add a local host. That may not be till next year though...local content, especially well done,
can be key to a station.

Boston does have an all-syndie conservative station, WTTT, which doesn't show up in the ratings.
WRKO, WBZ, and WTKK (various idealogies, with WRKO the most conservative) all have many local shows
and do very well.
Boston has one all-sports station that has a huge amount of local content, WEEI, and does great in the ratings.
The ESPN stations have one local show and don't show up in ratings, and the Sporting News station has no local shows and don't show up in the ratings.

>>Howie Barte WHJJ-A Providence

Heard a bit of his show yesterday--coverage of sentencing in Station nightclub fire case. WHJJ was AAR for awhile but ratings suffered, so they dropped it and went local (for the most part). Have showed some
steady improvement.

WTTT is Salem. Those are always ratings dogs.

And when WHJJ initially started picking up a large number of syndie shows, I thought then that it was a mistake. They replaced quite a few local shows at once, and this always spells ratings disaster. Same with any syndicated shows. Radio stations should not blow up the entire schedule at once.

Shame, since I think AAR could work in that market. Now I think everyone's afraid to do it after WHJJ mangled it.

The markets in which talk radio does best are those with established talkers and established local hosts.
It will be very interesting to watch what happens in afternoon drive as Howie and Jay face off (again).
Even more interesting, if Greater Media (as has been mentioned) tries to do regional syndication of Jay's local show (Howie Carr is already in regional syndication throughout New England).
Meanwhile, Sean Hannity is bumped to the side-lines on the Salem bottom-feeder.
That, by itself, says something about Boston as a market for local talk.
Clear Channel's Framingham/Boston progressive talk simulcast is canned talk in a market that wants local talk, as is Providence.
I wouldn't hold my breath for local live progressive talk. CC has two weak sticks being programmed at minimal cost as one turnkey operation. The two stations help round out the cluster sales package and that may be good enough - for now.
But Clear Channel is unloading smaller and weaker operations.
If this station - and other Clear Channel progressive talk turnkeys - go on the block, it could be bad news for the format.
