I fully expect Clear Channel to tweak WAXQ-104.3 in New York to a classic/modern rock hybrid in the next couple of months.
It's been rumored that despite David Lee Roth's replacing Stern on WBCN-104.1 here in Boston, Infinity may replace the classic rock format of sister WZLX-100.7 with "Free FM", and tweak WBCN to a hybrid of classic and modern rock. If that becomes the case, Roth may end up on 'ZLX and not 'BCN.
David Eduardo is correct in pointing out that this, in his words, "hardly qualifies for such a startling headline".
Yes, rock radio is having problems in many markets, but I don't think Howard Stern is the cause of these problems. I think it's more to the fact that young men today are more likely to listen to rap and hip-hop than rock, resulting in a lower share of audience for rock radio. A secondary cause might be some rock stations ignoring new trends in rock music.
