Steve Balmer: Within 10 years zero of you radio people will have a job --

Will post my comments from an earlier thread. Radio in small and medium markets is actually up 7%. PPM markets are also seeing a rebound in advertising sales. Interestingly, internet dollars are up, but that is primarily because of the thousands of new sites each day adding to the revenue pie. In reality, established internet sites, outside of search, are struggling. Newspapers failure to monetize their internet sites helped lead to their decline. Here were my earlier comments:

Don't think I agree. The one big thing the PPM has taught us is the power of radio as a listening and advertising medium. 235 million people tune in to radio in this country each day and some of the biggest users are twitter, facebook and myspace fans along with I-pod fans. Radio, it turns out is a complimentary media. (maybe why new Zunes included FM) Will radio change? Yes. Will it go away? No
The one thing I have also learned on the national sales side is that live, local with compelling music or talk wins. It seems to be content driven. Look at the winners 25-54:

Philadelphia: Killer B. Personality AC
Houston: WVEE-FM Personality Urban
NY: Z-100 Personality CHR
LA: KISS Personality CHR
Dallas; KISS Personality CHR
Boston: KISS Personality CHR
Chicago: WTMX Personality HOT/AC
Seattle: KPLZ Personality HOT/AC
Detroit: The Ticket: Personality Sports
WDC: WTOP: Heritage News Talk
Atlanta: WVEE heritage personality Urban

Heritage, live, local and content win in each market. No automated stations. Each of these with almost a million listeners to five million listeners a week depending on the market. Radio is hardly dead. What is dying is internet on the advertising side. I sold internet ads for 15.00 CPM two years ago. You are lucky to get a dollar today. Newspapers and stations that focused all their dollars on internet are really feeling the pain today. The internet is growing, but the cost to advertise has geometrically shrunk. It grows because the number of players grows by thousands each day, but only "search engines" have really made money.

among the aged ... with each year that passes more and more of that audience dies ... unreplaced ... ten years sweet princes, the clock is ticking ... tick tock tick tock ... :eek:

Assuming Steve Balmer actually said anything even close to what Elmo claims, a reminder that Mr. Balmer runs a software company. In every instance other than a browser, Microsoft has missed the mark when it comes to predicting anything involving consumer interest and the public Internet. Here is a list of the Microsoft on-line failures to date:

* Bing Search (most likely, Microsoft’s next big Internet failure)
* MSN Search
* Live Search
* Soapbox - a YouTube rival
* MSN Internet access
* Internet Explorer - crappiest browser with tons of security holes
* CarPoint car buying service
* MSFDC/Transpoint bill presentment and payment service
* LinkExchange Banner Network
* HomeAdvisor home buying service
* Passport Express Purchase online shopping service
* Electronic Wallet
* MoneyCentral
* Slate online magazine
* Web TV
* E-Stamp (minority investment in September 1997)
* Relay One (joint venture with UK Post)
* Firefly Networks (acquisition in April 1998)
* Wireless Knowledge (joint venture with Qualcomm in November 1998)
* SaveSmart web ad technology (minority investment in February 1998)
* eFusion (minority investment in August 1997)

Don't forget the Zune either. Gee, the new Zune has an FM radio in it too! If Balmer were so sure that radio was going to be over, why would he allow it to be in a MS product?

You see Elmo, when something bad or a news event happens, whether a blizzard in Boston, or breaking news such as a recent celebrity death, real average people (not Muppets), turn to radio and TV. They may get more information on-line later, but radio rules in the car. PPM has shown that more people than expected listen to radio every hour of every day. Average people (aka the majority) that don't listen to KEXP or attend Mac World, don't want to pay $130 a month for a "PDA fee" on their mobile devices.

The desperate excuses and backpeddling keep on churning! Tee hee hee! To address all of the above, very lengthy post, just see my first post in this thread. :D

Oh, and I'll continue accepting apologies for everyone yelling at me a few months ago "name your sources or shuddup!" when I said someone important was going to give 10 years life left in radio soon and that a new technology that needed the radio waves would be debuted! ;D

Can hardly wait to drop my July bomb! That one is so big the excuses from the "gurus" and "professors" will really have to be over the top. :p

BTW - Kylie was thinking this afternoon, what would she rather have ...

(a) listening to Kent and Allen spin the ol' silver discs

or

(b) spinnin my own silver discs while being able to tune to 101.5 and receive an inaudible ambient signal that would recharge my cell phone

Kylie chose "B"!!!!!!!!! :eek:

I asked the question "Silver discs?" with more than a hint of sarcasm, since most stations no longer use them except for emergency backup. Anyone remotely connected with a real job in the industry would know that most stations today use storage and playback systems such as AudioVault, NexGen, or similar.

Hello, friend! Kylie is not currently involved in any nostalgic businesses of yesteryear. Sorry if I misused your terminology.

Kylie is often chastised by typewriter repairmen, radio dee-jay's, telegraph operators, newspaper printing press ink chute cleaners and pay phone change collectors for getting their industrial terminology incorrect and it always makes her feel bad. :'(

Kylie is probably too young to remember when Pets.Com was a hot stock. Or that wonderful new OS, Windows ME.

TPT thinks he will still be in business ten years from now. TPT will probably retire then, and count my money. ;D

THANK YOU for bringing this back to earth. All these stupid pissing matches are getting OLD. Waste of time because there is NEVER a winner.

I was heading to work this morning wishing my four year old daughter in the kitchen goodbye while she was watching Sesame Street. And guess who came on? The real Elmo! While standing there with my briefcase, I started laughing. My daughter asks "What's funny Daddy?" "Oh its just funny because I've read some of Elmo's writing recently on a web site".

I can hear the soundtrack now.."Elmo has no life and visits radio board that Elmo knows nothing about JUUUST to stir up people by saying silly things! Me think Elmo has self esteem issues! Tee Hee!"

A "guru" resorting to snide name-calling and stone throwing?! ;) Say it ain't so! Did I hit that close to home! :eek:

"Guru" - here's hoping you're taking my advice to heart and learning a marketable skill like carpentry or auto repair. ;D

Ah...be careful: Just when it starts getting good there WILL be a pledge break. 20 minutes of incessant begging instead of two three-minute stopsets; although on the bright side it's easier for old farts like us to go relieve ourselves during a 20-minute window. Less pressure (in more ways than one!).

Hello, friend!.....Sorry if I misused your terminology.

You're not my "friend", and clearly you have no idea what you're talking about - especially if you have no clue about current - and future - industry terminology. Not to worry, though, I/we enjoy busting trolls. We'll be enjoying the very adaptable radio biz long after you're gone.

let me put it this way "who gives a s**t what steve balmer thinks?"

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2009/jun/24/microsoft-steve-ballmer-cannes

Can anyone point me to the sentence in this link that says " within 10 years zero of your radio people will have a job?". I don't see it. What I do see is Ballmer (p.s. his name has two 'LL's") referring to traditional PRINT media. He says everything will be digital/electronic a category that radio seems to fit in? Anyway, what kind of radio? AM radio? FM radio? Shortwave radio? Two-way radio? HD radio? Satellite radio? Internet radio? CB radio? Ham radio? Commercial radio? Non-comm radio? I'm sure I've missed at least half dozen more.

This post seems like an argument about something that wasn't said, by someone that didn't say it, about something that isn't defined? Entertaining maybe, but not real relevant and not in keeping with the usual good stuff here.

Have a great day everyone!
