Steve Hegwood resigns as OM at Radio One Atlanta

Steve just sent out this email:

To all addressed please be advised that I have resigned my position at Radio One Atlanta
as Operations Manager of WPZE, WAMJ/WUMJ and Program Director for WHTA Hot 107.9.

I have decided to focus full time on Hegwood Media LLC,
We will acquire and operatemedium and smallmarket radio stations in the Southeast.

In addition I will consult Independent companies, My first client is Murray Broadcasting,
(Chris Murray) owned WFXM in Macon,GA (Power 107.1).

"I would Truly like to Thank Cathy Hughes, Alfred Liggins, MicheleWilliams&Bruce Demps for the Opportunity with be apart of Radio One for a second term, It has been a very rewarding
experience. May God Bless you all"

Dude took their money and bounced!!! LMAO!!! :D Couldn't have happened to a better company.

Any idea what markets this guy might be interested in? Is there a particular reason why he's sticking to the Southeast?

His email is quite clear. he is leaving this jerkwater town for the big time of Macon, GA. We lost another one to Macon.

Hegwood never really wanted that job. He thought he was in line for national head of programming for Radio One. But Barry Mayo, R1 president, gave that position to Jay Stevens. There was really no room for Hegwood to stay at corporate so they sent him back here.

Since Hegwood arrived, HOT 107.9 sank big time!!! What good did he do Radio One Atlanta? His email says he'll accuire small and medium radio stations in the Southeast. Ummm, hasn't he done that already and failed when he owned On Top Communications? HOT 106(Albany,GA), HOT 104.5(New Orleans,LA), HOT 97.7(Jackson,MS) and HOT 102.1(Norfolk,VA) all went off the air thanks to Steve Hegwood filing bankruptcy. Good Luck! Hopefully, someone can come in and heat things back up at HOT 107.9.

He sees the writing on the wall. He knows R1 is going bankrupts and he's setting himself up to pick up some of their Raleigh and Charlotte stations for pennies on the dollar. Isn't it a hugh conflict of interest for a key manager in a publically trade radio company to also be an owner of other stations?

I did work for On Top and was one of several folks that eventually didn't get paid for work done. What does Hegwood know now that he didn't know back 6-8 years ago???

I worked for On-Top in Jackson, MS. WRJH 97.7 was involved in the bankruptcy filing, but it never went off the air. It continued to operate under the bankruptcy trustees until it was sold to the Roberts brothers.

Personally... I never had any problems with Steve Hegwood. I hope things work out for him this time.
