Steve Smith (Hot 97.7 New York, Hot 97 San Jose, Power 92 Phoenix) PD, dead at 62

K.M. Richards

Program Director, The Eighties Channel™
This will probably get moved to "In Memoriam" but I thought a lot of people who'd want to know wouldn't necessarily see it there, so I would ask Frank to leave it here for a few days before moving it.

And Steve Smith was with Cox Radio prior to leaving them in November 2021 as VP of Programming according to the article. Nearly 20 years ago when Smith was at Iheart then known as Clear Channel he was one of the people that got Ryan Seacrest to take over for Rick Dees on KIIS-FM's morning show and made that show national all over the Iheart CHR and AC stations.

Smith left Cox in November 2021 after 10 years as VP of Programming for its radio division and after consulting its stations for 17 years before that, starting in 1994.

At the time he half-kiddingly told Inside Radio he worked as a VP of Programming for just about every radio group.

At Emmis, he jetted back and forth between New York and Los Angeles, overseeing programing for “Hot 97” WQHT and “Power 106” KPWR. While at Clear Channel in L.A., he was instrumental in moving Ryan Seacrest from KYSR to mornings at KIIS-FM and revamping the legendary CHR. As VP of Programming at Cox, Smith oversaw CMG format leaders and worked directly on radio programming with stations and brand managers.
