Stingray acquires TuneIn

Stingray is one of the Canadian radio companies that geofences its music radio streams against U.S. listeners over copyright issues. Fortunately, some of the smaller Canadian commercial outlets don't do this.

I think TuneIn is the best platform to locate content on broadcast radio streams. You can actually search for syndicated content and it'll let you find live streams playing it. This distinguishes them from the other large platforms which would send you to the podcast, which may not post the latest content for several days. I know the number of ads TuneIn requires listeners to endure is annoying, but, apart from that, I don't think much else needs to be changed.

Will we be able to hear the Stingray Music streams on TuneIn soon? Like the Smooth Jazz stream that is on Samsung TV Plus?

I know the number of ads TuneIn requires listeners to endure is annoying, but, apart from that, I don't think much else needs to be changed.

From what I've seen and heard, Stingray is a company cares about content and giving its audience a good experience. I predict they will find a way to fix TuneIn's worst annoyances, especially with how it interrupts streams, overriding the programming with its own ads where there is no natural commercial break.

The main goal TuneIn has had over the last few years is to enlarge its base of paid subscribers. The platform of retransmitting local station streams isn't a money-maker for them. In the last few years, they've twice launched their own internally produced, hosted music channels in the hopes of increasing their premium subscribers. As far as I know, all of those hosts have been laid off.

About two years ago, Garth Brooks launched his own radio station on TuneIn. As part of the deal, he pays for the hosts on the channel. I don't know how successful it is, but if it's making money, I'd expect to see more of that kind of thing. Sting Ray is big on national formats in Canada, so you may start seeing those national formats being promoted on TuneIn.

Would be a welcome development if it comes to pass.

They need to fix their georestriction issues. More than once I've run across stations not available meaning they've not secured rights correctly. Absolute Radio 80s and Scala radio among them. The internet was never meant to be this fractured

You can listen to Absolute Radio 80s & Scala on this website:

They also gotta reduce the amount of ads. You can’t even tune or switch the station without being bombarded with an ad.

This led me to use the iHeart app and the actual stations app.

So I wonder what happens to my TuneIn Pro purchase from so many years ago.

For a while probably nothing, looks like they still offer it.

By the way, thanks for reminding me about this! I bought the app nearly 15 years ago and forgot about it until you guys mentioned it. It's an app from the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, not a subscription tier, so I was able to reinstall from my purchase history. TuneIn Pro gets rid of the pre-roll ads and the ads inserted into the middle streams by TuneIn, not a bad deal for a one-time fairly cheap price. And yes, it's still available...for now.

Oh I have Premium. It's worth it to avoid all those pesky adverts. I do the same with YouTube and Spotify.

Maybe the Internet's founders never meant it to be "this fractured," but we all have different agendas. The only real way to fix the geofencing iffues is to have one music licensing fee that applies worldwide and I don't see *that* happening any time soon.
