"Streakin Through the 70s" w/ Billy Shears on 98.9 WQLV (Harrisburg rimshot AC)

"Streakin Through the 70s" w/ Billy Shears on 98.9 WQLV (Harrisburg rimshot AC)

I was just curious whether anyone listens to or has even heard of this syndicated show. It's featured on Saturday nights from 8 PM - 1 AM on a rimshot AC station located NW of Harrisburg, PA: WQLV FM 98.9 "The Pulse of Central PA". The show is exclusively dedicated to music from the 70s, and what I like is that Billy Shears doesn't stick to a "safe" (and BORING) playlist...he actually plays certain forgotten or abandoned gems from the decade, some examples including:

Last Night I Didn't Get to Sleep at All- 5th Dimension
Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes- Jimmy Buffett
No Time- Guess Who
Hello Stranger- Yvonne Elliman
How Long- Ace
Sharing the Night Together- Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show
Jackie Blue- Ozark Mountain Daredevils
You are the Woman- Firefall
Venus- Shocking Blue
Wildfire- Michael Murphy
When I Need You- Leo Sayer
Song Sung Blue- Neil Diamond

Also, his show is great for "wimps" like me, because he actually plays artists such as the Carpenters, whom other oldies shows seem to be entirely afraid of. Interestingly, the show is virtually non-existent as far as the internet: it doesn't have a website and no one seems to even talk about it. Due to its complete absence on the internet, I actually thought the show was unique to WQLV until I found that a couple of stations around the country feature Billy Shears as a regular "DJ" for various time slots and formats, and he can't be in PA, FL, and TX at the same time...

I live in York and I can actually receive WQLV reasonably in the car, though the reception is VERY location-sensitive: even a few yards make a huge difference. And at home, I am miraculously able to get a near-perfect signal from WQLV by laying my dipole "T" antenna flat and pointing it towards the transmitter. I think this is miraculous considering that WQLV's transmitter is a measly 780 watts and located >40 miles from my house. I got the dipole antenna just so I could listen to this show ;D whenever I'm home on Saturday nights (and Dick Bartley's "Classic Countdown", also featured on WQLV: Sunday mornings). For my peculiar tastes, these two shows are really the only 2 programs I can listen to continuously without getting bored. 96.1 WSOX does play some decent music, especially on weekends, but their signal (while strong) usually tends to contain interference and/or distortion in my house, and I tend to be a bit picky about sound quality ;). Stations like 98.5, 92.7, 103.3, and 101.3 also play some decent songs (in my opinion), but they tend to be the SAME decent songs...the problem with these stations is that there is virtually no novelty, so I have ended up growing tired of them.

Oh, by the way, my age is a ripe old 27.

Re: "Streakin Through the 70s" w/ Billy Shears on 98.9 WQLV (Harrisburg rimshot AC)

Billy Shears aparently worked in Harrisburg at some point:

Billy Shears (Streakin' Through the 70s)
Billy has been in radio almost since radio was delivered in sound format...since the early 70’s, working in markets as small as Barnesboro, Pennsylvania to as large as Atlanta. His multi format experience includes AC, Hot AC, News-Talk, Contemporary Christian, Country and Top 40. Billy also worked at WRMM, Atlanta, WFMM, Pittsburgh, WFBG & WRTA, Altoona, PA; WKAL, Rome, NY; WRKZ, Harrisburg, PA. Billy also was an air talent/Asst. PD and Production Director for Y-98 (KYKY, St. Louis) and WMJJ (Magic 96, Birmingham).

Just in case anyone cares, Billy Shears' 70s show is no longer aired on WQLV as of last week. Ironically, it wasn't specifically the 70s program that got dumped as one would predict...rather, WQLV flipped formats from AC to "fresh new music" or something like that, so obviously this show no longer fit with their programming anymore. Needless to say, I no longer listen to that station, and coincidentally, I can no longer get the station in York anyway for whatever reason. As of now, they still air Dick Bartley's "Classic Countdown" on Sunday mornings (which actually includes some decent late 60s-early 80s songs), but I suspect it is only because their purchased time hasn't run out yet.

On the bright side for those who like to hear a few 70s songs that are NOT overplayed ad nauseum, at least Central PA still has "Charlie Tuna-the 70s", which is being aired on WSOX as I write this (Sunday nights 7-12). Of course, WSOX is primarily dedicated to the 70s, but unfortunately, the station's regular programming consists of about 80% boring ad nauseum tunes. Mike Harvey's SuperGold on Saturday nights is not much better...possibly even worse since you actually expect to hear a few novel songs considering how great Harvey's show was 10 years ago...but his show is little more than a continuation of the stale WSOX playlist. Charlie Tuna at least plays SOME interesting songs, which make his show worth listening to, IMHO. For instance, I heard the following songs on Charlie Tuna's show, which are REALLY rare on radio today:

"Joy"- Apollo 100
"Two Divided By Love"- Grass Roots
"So Very Hard to Go"- Tower of Power
"I Just Can't Help Believing"- BJ Thomas

All nice songs to hear during a specialty show.

None deserve play in a regular "Greatest Hits" format.

I could see Joy and I Just Can't Help Believing on 960 WHYL.

I agree that "So Very Hard to Go" and "Two Divided by Love" probably don't belong in regular programming rotation today. But as far as "Joy" and "I Just Can't Help Believing", what is your reasoning? I know that virtually no FM station around here will play them today...I'm just curious to hear how you would justify this.

Re: "Streakin Through the 70s" w/ Billy Shears on 98.9 WQLV (Harrisburg rimshot AC)

Joy and I Just Can't help Believing fall into that same category of "AC songs from yesteryear...ala Carpenters, Neil Diamond, Barbara Streisand, Air Supply etc that have moved out of the format and more into the nostalgia arena. That's why they probably would fit WHYL.

Having the ability to listen to radio stations on line today gives you plenty of additional options.

Vinyl, check out stations on the weekend that replay old American Top 40 Countdowns from the 70s. It was this week on July 1971 this past weekend, and both John Denver & the Carpenters had songs in the top 10. Carole King's It's Too Late was #1. What's really fun are some of the songs on the lower end of the countdown that you definitely haven't heard in years; many cases since they were currents because they didn't become big enough hits to survive as gold.

Re: "Streakin Through the 70s" w/ Billy Shears on 98.9 WQLV (Harrisburg rimshot AC)

By the time ACC rolled out in the 70's, most contemporary stations already cut their current list to 30 songs. If a station airs the old ACC shows, they are for the most part playing a lot of stiffs during the first hour and a half or so. This is why I've always had a problem with countdown shows. The reason ACC could pull this off was because of Casey. His content even made stiffs sound interesting. If a song was brand new....he'd tell us about it. I've heard songs that I totally forgot about...or would like to forget about....but these old shows are still fun to listen to.

Vinyl---Found another option for you http://easy931.com/

At the Jersey shore. They do go a tad on the older side..some 50s stuff to appeal to the retirees but all those 70s artists you love are there.
