SUMMER '12: ABC KEEPS GENERAL HOSPITAL, CANCELS REVOLUTION, ADDS GMA AFTERNOON

Makes sense. After "The Chew," "Revolution" is just another hour of advice-oriented TV that isn't even as entertaining as "Chew" (though I admit I like Michael Symon and Mario Batali from Food Network). Also, NBC runs a fourth hour of "Today" that seems like a cross between "Today's" third hour and either "The View" or CBS's version of that show. ABC may be taking a page from that idea.

With apologies to the late Gil Scott-Heron, apparently "The Revolution" will no longer be televised.

Pretty much as expected, except for the addition of "GMA: Afternoon."
Will that air at 2, or fill the 3-4 slot until Katie's show debuts?

Oh boy, "Good Morning America" in the afternoon. That makes me laugh. I know it is also branded "GMA" but it still stands for "Good Morning America."

So, if "Good Morning America" is going to run in the afternoon, here's what they should do: Gear it to the unproductive in society. They could focus on how to cure hangovers, where the best places are to buy crack, etc. It could be kind of like that skit that ran on SNL a few years ago called "Good Morning Meth." Yea, like that. Then they might have something.

To answer my own question, according to Broadcasting & Cable,
"GMA: Afternoon" gets the 2 PM slot for nine weeks beginning July 9,
so I presume that means "GH" moves to 2 on Sept. 10, the day Katie's
show starts.

One thing that's a virtual guarantee now: "GH" will celebrate its 50th
anniversary April 1, 2013. That will make it the third soap to crack that
elusive mark, after "Guiding Light" (57 years on television, 72 counting radio)
and "As The World Turns" (54 years on television, no radio).

On the B&C site some readers wanted to know why ABC couldn't keep "GH"
at 3 and put Katie at 4 (some of these same readers demanded the return of
"All My Children" and "One Life To Live" as well). The reason is that three
o&os (WABC, WPVI, and WTVD), as well as some other affiliates (WSB, KSAT)
started 4 PM local newscasts when Oprah decided to give up her show and are
not about to give them up.

In Chicago, WLS-TV has had a successful afternoon lineup for years that they're not gonna change it so easily. General Hospital is currently on at 2pm, Inside Edition at 3pm, Jeopardy at 3:30pm, local news from 4pm - 5:30 pm, World News Tonight at 5:30pm, local news at 6pm, & Wheel of Fortune at 6:30pm. If GMA: Afternoon will be a network show, I could see this show pre-empted by many affiliates (possibly by O&O WLS-TV, unless it airs in The Revolution's timeslot), because the affiliates usually have successful programs in the afternoon timeslots.

For affiliates & some O&O ABC stations that now have news in Oprah's old timeslot (WLS-TV was the exception, as they had her on at 9am), it'll be a hard sell for GMA: Afternoon, as the news might be doing that well that they're not giving it up. I can't blame those stations, or even the viewers who would like to have a 4pm newscast.

It's no different than CMT calling themselves CMT but they only air country music programming for about 10% of the average broadcast day. ::)

There's no selling to be done. Where "The Revolution" now airs, GMA: Afternoon goes. And when the 9 weeks is up, General Hospital simply slides into that same slot.

Exactly. "GH" will air in Chicago at 1 come September; I
assume WLS is carrying Katie, who'd be on at 2. Nothing
to change from 3 to 7.
