"Sun" Sets In Favor Of Hip-Hop In Anniston

Anniston has become a real market. Not a big market but one that offers enough variety to keep listeners from being dependent on Birmingham stations. With this change you can now find country, AC, rock, urban and talk on local signals. Some advertisers have felt that buying Anniston wasn't necessary if they were buying Birmingham, and it used to be mostly true, but that is no longer the case.

A hip-hop trimulcast has sprung up over the weekend, as "WGBZ - The Beat" debuted on 99.1 FM and 104.3 FM, as well as 1430 AM.

Previously, all three frequencies were airing a soft AC format, dubbed "Sunny 104.3". Their website, http://www.wsyasunny.com, now redirects to sister station WTDR's website.

The newspaper article says the new station is on AM 1430, but 1490 (WSYA) was the station originally rebroadcasting on 99.1 and 104.3. AM 1430 is WFHK in Pell City.

Great move, but I hope it sounds decent. I guess 95.7 JAMZ out of Birmingham finally has "some" competition even though it's in Anniston..

Is JAMZ even a player in Anniston? The signal's tiny compared to the other stations in town. If there's an urban player in Anniston, it's probably Hot 107 or … well something from Atlanta maybe. Or 1240 from Gadsden. I'm not even sure if they really play urban contemporary or not.

BTW nice that the reporter got the AM frequency wrong and no one corrected them.

You think that's bad... The AP story about former Hot 97/New York DJ "Megatron" erroneously reported that he previously worked, not at Hot 97, but at sister station "Kiss-FM". And on top of that, they published the incorrect call letters of "Kiss-FM." So now you've got hundreds of websites with stories listing that Megatron worked at "WKRS."

Then again, I'm one to talk... I was looking right at the Wikipedia entry for the Anniston trio, and didn't even think to put down the correct AM frequency in the original post... :-X

95.7 Jamz cannot be heard in Anniston because of its lower signal strength and because of WHMA-FM, located on 95.5 FM in Anniston.

Hot 107.7 usually showed up in the Anniston ratings. We really can't pick up anything here out of Atlanta aside from 105.3 El Patron.

Good for the Anniston area. Because of the Birmingham market maneuvering, I've always thought that area of Alabama could use a localized urban outlet, particularly Gadsden (assuming you could get a full power signal big enough). Perhaps a translator could be part of the solution there also.
