SYNDICATED RADIO PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR

I just took this clip off my satellite from The Howard Stern Show. Two of these personalities up for the award are aired right here in Providence. Listen up Coast 93.3. In my opinion Stern makes a great point. For those who choose not to listen... let's just say there isn't anybody good in Radio anymore. That sums up the whole clip. Click the link below to hear further details. Don't click it at work or around kids if you are sensitive to a little profanity.

And this is why in spite of so many stations crowing about providing local content it just isn't so. Most local jocks who have the freedom to do more than the usual liners, etc are actually mimicing the syndicated ones with the whole obsession with national pop culture and show biz people who no one would even be that aware of if they didn't have such instant access to entertainment news online. Before the internet you got fluff news once a day at the most with USA Today and once a week with the scandal sheets. OK so you did get news off the wire but you didn't have this constant bombardment of it. So now morning shows talk about entertainment figures and what was on TV last night. Tesh used to be considered a plastic joke on ET and his music was always considered a joke. Now look at the punch line he's delivered. I give Seacrest credit for parlaying basic good jock ability into what he has become but all he really is is radio's version of ET and now Billy Bush is following in his footsteps. Nowadays everyone in radio wants to be just like the people they actually laugh at.

You could go to just about any city and listen to any morning show. The programs will sound strikingly similar. Pretty much the same elements. Traffic, Weather, then a couple of songs, followed by Entertainment stories taken from the internet which are then followed by a couple of lame jokes with a gross amount of exaggerated laughter by two hosts and a producer.

One day we will look back at this kind of radio and laugh at it (not with it, but AT IT) in much the same way we look back and laugh at 70's Disco and 80's clothes. Except we are living the joke right now. Every morning all across America Radio stations are living the joke TODAY. That's how bad it is.

The only ones doing strikingly different morning shows on a local level are the ones who have been doing it a long time and they aren't about to change now. Paul and Al for example. To have some new team do something unusual is risky because you could end up with the show being too much of an acquired taste and stations don't give audiences enough time to acquire that taste. Look at Quinn and Cantara.

The pop culture thing is nothing new. It was happening in the 70's too but people weren't as obsessed with it. Stations that target females now seem to do it from the point of view that most females are brainless and care more about Brangelina than their own lives. Stations that target men think they all spend their nights in strip clubs and talk about nothing but sports all day. Radio has pigeonholed everyone and to be honest I don't believe anyone in radio is even qualified to make these kinds of assumptions. Most PDs are good at formatics and Selector. That's it. They pigeonhole everything else.

Hey John Mayer and Jennifer Aniston have apparently split. Everyone who cares will know it by 10PM tonight. Every morning show will talk about it tomorrow as if they're breaking the news. It's old and it isn't local. It's why the Seacrests of the world are taking over. They do this stuff better than the locals do and look better on station websites too.
