Taking An Unscientific Poll Re: Sports Talk Radio

Doing this on my Facebook and Twitter feeds, too.

What are the top three elements that make for good sports talk radio?

List your answers below. No swipes or derogatory comments at other people or stations please. This is a legit fact-finding mission.

Keep it on AM, AM it must stay, and stream it on the internet.

I was the kid that got picked last for sports teams in school. Okay, second to last. Still, I don't care for sports and just see it as the reason so many good radio stations were changed.

We have way too many talkers, and people are tired of hate radio, all sports can get that way too, with Earth FM I hope they continue to spread across the upstate even more

Upstate,

I understand where you are coming from, but the shift is most certainly towards FM and sports is doing very well on FM. I don't see that trend being changed now.

1. fun presentation: Mark Packer used to be great at that. But not forced jocularity like John Boy & Billy or NFL pregame shows, genuine fun.
2. community involvement: something two-way going on outside the air chain. Stay local when you can. Even local high school scores would be nice.
3. daypart: pick the time most people will listen. I dig listening to our ONE local sports show, but it's on AM right when I'm going to work, so I have to listen on podcast when I can. So I guess 'podcast' would go back to #2, or be 3.b.?

As a now-listener, who came from the biz, I feel that I can answer this with decent starch: To me, the #1, Nucleus of the whole thing is the credibility of the Host. Eeee-mediutly to the left or right, might be a Co-host, and/or Sidekicks A-Plenty(Beacon term). Whatever the case or number, they too much grasp a sharp shovel! Otherwise, you'd have to settle for Myself & Cobb Oxford itemizin' & flappin' lengthy Pro Wrestling stories. #2, would be tangable, right in front of you, notes, and printed "Show Prep". Those of the credible variety are always armed, with the afore mentioned. #3, The Entertaining/Possibly Humorus element. If you are one of the reclusively unlaid, allowed to read scores into an unsuspecting Live mic....the needle on the...
Bor-rometer is going to peg all the way to China; leaving us open for Hacking. Alotta funny things happen every week in Sports...Be On All Of Them! ...and finally #4, incoming caller maintain-unce: No, when you are Live, you have no Iddy, nor can you control what the Boob on the other end of the line is gonna say. A Seasoned host will have no problem suppling them with a free dialtone, courtsy of AT&T! However, good quality banter, regarding a hot sports topic, is very hard to beat. Clemson fans don't want to hear about the Clowny sack, that made every National highlight reel between here and Bute, Montanna. The Egloo was moved far away from the Eskeemo! Eleven yards or around 33-Feet, seven inches. Truely, an amazing athlete.
Now, if you wanna hear the story of Wahoo McDaniel, 4-slashed tires, the steel back door of the GMA, and me, the Ring Announcer, hiding in the broom closet, you'll have to join me for Barbeque,...and yer payin'!

Alright Dan, I'll give you some honest feedback. First of all, as a one time listener to a local ''Talk Sports'' station, I can tell you that partisan radio is the quickest way to shed this listener. What I prefer in a sports talk show first and foremost is (#1) a knowledgeable host. Someone who isn't tethered to just 1 or 2 areas of expertise. It's kind of hard since in this area of the country (and yes I grew up here) the big games in town are high school and Klempsen 'N' Carowliner 24/7. Second, (#2) variety of guests! Yes, no more ...''well it's 10:30 on a Tuesday time to talk to ___"... This old trick may fill airtime but it shows a lack of creativity on the host's part. Third, (#3) interaction outside the booth. Nothing screams old school, blue collar than a host who isn't afraid to mix it up face to face with their listeners at a remote! ( One local host will do this to his credit, but only if he would have not bent down and kissed the ring! For shame, whatta waste.) Oh well. As John Lennon once said in a song " Gimme Some Truth". Pipe Dreams!! ::) ::) ::) ::) Good luck to you sir, your gonna need it...
