Arbitron's Summer book is out for NYC.
The NY Post's John Mainelli reports:
<blockquote>
Satellite-bound Howard Stern is still No. 1 in morning drive, but he's now tied with all-news WINS (1010 AM) and down 15 percent from a year ago.
Politics-obsessed WABC (770 AM) and WLIB (1190 AM) — conservative and liberal, respectively — are still showing signs of partisan fatigue. They're up from spring but down from a year ago.
WLIB's midday duo of Jerry Springer and Al Franken were especially hard hit, plunging 35 percent from year-ago ratings.
</blockquote>
Arbitron counts 10 am to 3 pm as one daypart, so Springer and Franken are not reported separately. During last summer's Arbitron book, WLIB broadcast "Unfiltered."
The NY Daily News' David Hinckley offered a somewhat less downbeat view:
<blockquote>
Howard Stern of WXRK (92.3 FM) was tied with all-news WINS (1010 AM) for No. 1 in morning drive.
Talk stations WABC (770 AM) and Air America (WLIB, 1190 AM) both ticked up slightly, while WINS, which celebrated its 40th anniversary, had an unusually strong summer.
</blockquote>

Apparently, the audiences for talk-based formats have not continued to erode. In all likelihood, talk programmers are holding their collective breath to see whether this is a fluctuation or a trend.
The bad news is the talk audience continues to skew too old for the advertiser-coveted "money demos." For a preview of what this can mean for talk radio, check out the Standards and the Oldies boards. Hoping to bring younger listeners to talk radio, Infinity reportedly is set to bring its new FreeFM format to WXRK when Stern departs. WXRK currently airs Classic Rock after Stern. The station is tied for 10th overall, and tied for 17th in PM Drive, but tied for 1st in AM Drive (with Stern). WXRK is 5th in the 18 to 35 and 24 to 54 segments. Apparently, Infinity is thinking the future of talk radio is FM and PG rated versions of Stern (likely including Boston's Jay Severin).
