Talk Radio Scoreboard for Major Markets: February 2015

Winter weather often boosts the ratings on All-News stations. But in markets where All-News gets a snowfall advantage, it often means less listening to Talk Radio stations. Four Talk Radio stations scored in the top 10 in their city's ratings, KFI Los Angeles, KTRH Houston, WMAL Washington and WSB Atlanta, although KFI and KTRH were right in the #10 spot. WBAP Dallas, WPHT Philadelphia and WRKO Boston all finished at #20. WRKO was hurt by the defection of long-time afternoon host Howie Carr to a rival station, although Carr has now decided to return. WLS Chicago, which is rearranging its line up, wound up at #25. WOR New York had lower ratings than WKXW, which is based in Trenton NJ, outside the NYC market.

1. New York ... WABC (Cumulus) #19 ... WKXW(FM) (Townsquare) #20 ... WOR (iHeart) #21
2. Los Angeles ... KFI (iHeart) #10 ... KEIB (iHeart) #34* tie ... KABC (Cumulus) #36* tie
3. Chicago ... WGN (Tribune) #11 tie ... WLS (Cumulus) #25
4. San Francisco ... KGO (Cumulus) #19 tie ... KSFO (Cumulus) #21 ... KKSF (iHeart) #27
5. Dallas ... WBAP (Cumulus) #20
6. Houston ... KTRH (iHeart) #10 tie
7. Washington ... WMAL-AM-FM (Cumulus) #7
8. Philadelphia ... WPHT (CBS) #20
9. Atlanta ... WSB/WSBB(FM) (Cox) #2 ... WYAY(FM) (Cumulus) #19 tie
10. Boston ... WRKO (Entercom) #20

* I only include commercial Talk stations that scored at least a one rating, except for heritage Talk outlet KABC Los Angeles and Rush's LA outlet, KEIB.

Not a lot of surprises, except that, despite the weather, both WABC and WOR saw increases. Perhaps these are tied to people from music stations who went there instead of WCBS or WINS for weather updates. The WLS rumors will have to play out to see what, if any impact, they will have, or if they are true, what the impact of losing Rush will mean to that station.....

Time for CBS radio to do something with 1210 AM WPHT. I mean, seriously, winter weather or not. The cume has dropped in the last 3 books. That should tell CBS radio something, that something's not right here with the station and the overall format. If they decide to drop talk, I would be in full support for it.
