Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Radio Ratings: June 2013

Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater: http://ratings.****************/cgi-bin/rol.exe/arb087

Overall age 6+ publicly released data for subscribing stations is for the June 2013 survey period covering Thu. 5/23/13-Wed. 6/19/13.
Next survey period will be July 2013 (covering Thu. 6/20/13-Wed. 7/17/13) with the data release date being Tue. 8/6/13.

I'd say the switch back in January to Listener Driven Radio paid off.

Not sure if it was because it engaged the listeners, or if it drove traffic to WSUN'S web and mobile-based streams to mitigate the signal issues. They also managed to integrate the app while keeping the on-air presentation live and local.

The wider, more diverse playlist and the rising popularity/chart success of Alternative as a genre these days didn't hurt either. Cox is on a roll these days.

WFLA, on the other hand...

Perhaps it's time to find a home on FM for 970, but I'm not sure that would entirely solve the issue.

I thought 97x's new schtick was stupid, but I was wrong. I've heard lots of kids talking about the "new" 97x lately. I gotta give them props for actually bringing in a younger audience.

I agree with you Cedric. I wrote off the new schtick as well, thinking of it as gimmickry, but people are tuning in. Shame these listeners are supposedly requesting a bunch of 90's pop-rock. Not nearly enough new music. But I can't argue with the numbers.

Does the PPM pick up and give credit when it "hears" a station's web stream as opposed to AM/FM OTA signal? If so, I would imagine that 97X's new positioning of encouraging online listening and "voting" by either mobile device or desktop computer has vastly increased their streaming audience. What once was a station that was probably blown off and forgotten about when the radio in the office or shop couldn't receive the FM signal clearly, is now one that by using WiFi or simply one of these type devices is one that actually CAN be heard anywhere around Tampa Bay. That would be my guess.... they've increased listenership on the stream and that IF the PPM gives credit to that, it's picking it up in more places than when they only relied on their over the air signal. Which as we all know, can be a pain to receive on most radios inside buildings around the major metro area.

I listen pretty much all day on my desktop computer, a desired cume builder if there ever was one. (of course being in the biz I would NEVER signup for Arbitron, although I have been asked!) But for all of those "mobile device" people like my daughter, she had ear buds in most of the time. How does PPM deal with that!

Web streams are encoded seperatly from the air signal. Web strean ratings can be included in the off air ratings or seperatly at the discretion of the station.

So then we could assume that the stream listening is being included in the overall 6+ rating for 97X. Wonder if many if not all the stations are doing this. I'd be curious. Remember also that the Cox web streams are available on a number of different platforms including their own sites, TuneIn, and even iHeart.

no streaming is not included in their number. You would see WSUN-FM-STREAM show up. they've had a couple metters drop in their lap and that's all it takes. If you look @ all access.com & the Orlando market you'll see what I mean by the way the streams are coded.

I'm just trying to wrap my head around this. It really doesn't seem like their playlist has changed much.
The music has changed, in that they use a lot more 90's hits to draw in the early 30's demo, whereas before it was a lot more hot-on-youtube pop-rock music, more in the 18-24.

I hear the station playing a lot of Beastie Boys, Macklemore, etc. lately. What, only white rappers on a rock station?

wsun actually sounds tight and well formatted. It seems they give their air personalities a bit of flexibility as well.

actually streaming numbers ARE included in the published numbers. Cox is among the growing number of companies that are having their over the air and streaming numbers combined in the estimates. Companies that are not having the numbers combined will see their estimates show up separately as WXXX stream.
