Taylor on R-I: Garabedian to get 3 Cape FMs (93.5, 101.1, 102.9)

From the Taylor on Radio-Info.com newsletter:
>>For $2.7 million, apparently. Goldman Sachs didn’t bid on the Cape Cod FMs that TRI hears have very little cash flow. (The Cape’s a tough business environment for radio.) (John) Garabedian is the former New England station owner, onetime Boston jock and “Open House Party” syndicated host, and he’s interested in these three stations – rock “Pixy 103” WPXC, Hyannis. And the variety hits “Frank” simulcast of WFQR, Harwich Port (93.5) and WFRQ, Mashpee (101.1). They weren’t included in the package of New England assets scattered around New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

Garabedian's one of my radio heroes, I really look up to his entire career and everything he's done. This is good news!

I couldn't ask for a better person to be purchasing these stations. Frank FM is my FAVORITE radio station and I fear the format will change. They just did an all '90s weekend last weekend and the variety was great. In any case, my first thought was that John might possibly use at least one of the stations to flip it to CHR and include Open House Party on Sat/Sun nights. We'll have to see what happens! At least it's some exciting and interesting news for once, even if it means the death of my favorite radio station.

I also forgot to mention that in 2003, I hung out with John at WORC-FM in Worcester, MA. I was the Creative Services Director and Assistant Program Director of that station back then. John was part of a bunch of Worcester radio legends that attended the WORC Radio Reunion. I do recall he invited me to his home to sit in during an Open House Party show, but I never followed up on the invitation. John's a great guy that cares about radio and I am a bit excited about this news.

Well doesn't someone need to bring back the rose???

I was actually thinking that! Maybe they could put it on either 93.5 or 101.1! Why does Frank FM need 2 frequencies? It would be really nice to bring CHR/Top 40 back to Cape Cod.

Looking at coverage maps on radio-locator, it seems one covers the western part of the Cape
(main signal) or Upper Cape best while the other covers the eastern part, or Lower Cape

101.1 Falmouth area http://radio-locator.com/pats/WFRQ_FM_LU.gif
93.5 Harwich Post http://radio-locator.com/pats/WFQR_FM_LU.gif

There may be a bit of overlap in the main signal (within red circle) around Hyannis, etc but apparently having Frank on two signals winds up covering the entire Cape with a pretty good
signal

I was almost about to say the same thing about WSHK 105.3 Kittery ME and WSAK 102.1
Hampton NH...why the same programming on 2 stations in roughly the same area?
I looked at the radio-locator maps; the Kittery station's xmtr is located just east of Dover NH
and the very edge of the red circle is around Hampton, Exeter. The Hampton station is located just N of the MA border and the outer edge of the circle reaches Portsmouth. So they need
105.3 for the Dover/Portsmouth/Kittery area and 102.1 for Hampton, etc. Just like the 93.5
and 101.1 situation: it spreads the signal out a bit to the N and S, or E and W. Thus the
simulcast programming (one could easily say "if they're in the same area, why not have 2
different stations?" Because they're not in the exact same area...they're a bit of a distance
apart.)

considering Frank is one of those Nassau cookie cutter branding/formats, my guess is the imaging and maybe the format would get blown up..and this goes for the rest of the group of Nassau stations in NNE too.

Frank on Cape Cod isn't like any of the other Nassau cookie cutter Franks. Check out the playlist http://wfrq.tunegenie.com/ This past hour (Tuesday Noon) they've played Katy Perry, Colbie Callait, and even One Direction. More like the Jack format, but more 2000s/2010s stuff.

Thank you, radio1047. I was about to mention the same thing. All other Frank FM's in Nassau's assets were/are a flavor of classic hits. Frank FM on the Cape is classified as "Adult Hits" (sometimes refereed to as Variety Hits). Basically, what Jack FM is, but of course each station has it's own flavor.

I particularly have fell in love with Frank FM over the past 5 years since it debuted. I like all different kinds of music, and Frank on the Cape does this nicely, fusing together the 70s through today. My favorite is the themed weekends, including all 80s, all 90s, class reunion (different year each hour), #1s, etc. The hits from the past decade that are in rotation (like other Adult Hits stations) primarily follows Hot AC.

In any case, John hinted in an article that he intends to keep the staff of Pixy and Frank and only intends to tweak the music mix a bit. I still will hope that Frank doesn't get tweaked very much. But unfortunately, all good things must come to an end sometimes. :) I still wouldn't be surprised however, if John is considering CHR.

I wouldn't mind if he brought Don Kelley back and re-created WGTR!

Ironically, WGTR is currently the call sign at Qantum Myrtle Beach's Gator 107.9. Qantum of course owns Cool 102 as well.
