TED ATKINS IN FINAL STAGES OF CANCER - URGENT

Just letting you folks know that the beloved Cap'n Showbiz, Ted Atkins, is in Shadyside Hospital nearing the end of his battle with cancer. An e-mail forwarded to me from Keith Abrams says he and Karen were in Florida when very suddenly Ted's condition took a turn for the worse.

He is on palliative care and Karen is pretty much with him 24-7.

Please keep Ted and Karen in your thoughts and prayers.

Just heard from John Rook that Ted Atkins has passed.

I programmed WEEP in Pittsburgh the early 70s when he had WTAE sounding the best in its history. Ted was a real pro and everyone in the market at the time were better programmers from listening to his station and being challeged by him.

Graduation Day, Cap'n Showbiz. Thanks for everything. You did good and enriched countless lives.

I'm sure that when God welcomed you to his table, there was heard a resounding tympani roll, with The Great Voiceover Talent declaring: "And NOW, ladies and gentlemen....the hits just KEEP ON COMIN' with TEDDDDD....ATKINS!!"
 
Ted was the finest general manager I ever worked for. He was all the good things a 'talent' could ever want in a boss. It was a pleasure and honor to know Captain Showbiz. My condolences and prayers are with his wife and family. RIP Ted.

I remember John Garry expressing his appreciation to WTAE management on the air one morning. He had been called as a witness in the trial of a woman who was accused of murder. He said that at many stations, that kind of notoriety would usher a personality right off the station. He was clearly moved by the support he got from the station, and it must have been the work of Mr. Atkins.

That would have been in the 80s, I think. Sadly, that kind of notoriety today would be a ticket to the top at some outlets.

It was 1976-77, and was front page news.
