TEGNA cleans house at KING - Bounds/Renner/Enersen/Byron Out

Part time, on special assignments:

http://nwasianweekly.com/2016/05/robert-mak-joins-komo-4/

KOMO also picked up Jim Forman as a behind the scenes assignment manager immediately after he took (was forced to take?) the KING buy out. I wonder if his health will ever allow him to get back in front of the camera full time again.

Allen Schauffler is also at KOMO for Olympics coverage. Don't know what kind of contract he's on.

Interesting to see Sinclair gobbling up the talent in this market. KIRO has also upgraded a bit with a second evening anchor team in Dave Wagner and Siemny Kim.

Watched the market yesterday. KOMO looks real good. KCPQ has a nice look and good anchors. KIRO has a nice set, but could use live active backdrops. KING...well I think there is work to do here. At times it looks like they are doing a newscast from the interior of a 7-11.

I agree, Dave Wagner is a nice addition to KIRO. Very strong anchor, and you can tell he has been doing this for awhile.

Yes, he's very good. Its nice to see a mid-to-late career guy able to land in a top market. Usually once they lose their job somewhere, these days, they're done. We've postulated for years on this board that Steve Raible, not the string of female anchors he's had along side him in over 20 years on the lead spot is the one holding back the KIRO news ratings. For the first time, he's having to share the weeknight newscasts with another anchor team, and KIRO can run their own controlled experiment, in real time.

As for the KING set, yeah, its really small. It seems awfully cramped, and there isn't even enough room in there to get the "long shots" of the anchors that the set was seemingly designed for. But worse than the small size seems to be the fact that the newscasts are full of technical glitches - going to the wrong camera, graphics not set on the screen, etc. Did the entire production staff leave too?

Somewhere in this thread, someone noted that if TEGNA's not careful, KOMO and KIRO are going to be able to capitalize on their turmoil. Looks like we're starting to see some of it, especially at KOMO. Cox has always kept the pursestrings tight with KIRO - certainly Bob Jordan was unable to execute his vision for the station, only getting as far as overhauling the morning news. But the reporting corps at KIRO has always been, and remains strong to this day. It just feels like Cox won't give them enough cash to capitalize on what they've got. We have gone more than a decade without an evening sports anchor, which just seems unfathomable to me.

KMan, I am wondering if you are who I think you are. But I don't want to out you. Did you ever work in a market at 1250 AM and skip over to the tv side? If you answer affirmitively, I will not out you! Promise.

It's not me. Never worked in the biz. When I graduated with my bachelor's degree a decade ago I had three industries I wanted to work in. I picked a non-broadcasting/journalism door (though that was one of the choices) and well, ten years later I've never "reset" and gone back to try the other two career paths.

Well, you seem to have a lot of tv news knowledge. Good for you!

I thought you might be Aaron Brown, former KING-TV and KIRO-TV anchor, then on to ABC, and eventually CNN. Who now lives in Arizona. But thanks for the correction. Do you have a connection to Seattle?

I've seen NWCN's newscasts lately...the new newsroom is more cramped than the set they had at Dexter Ave. I hardly ever watch them anymore, other than New Year's Eve (Space Needle), and an occasional Gardening with Ciscoe or Northwest Backroads rerun.
How is KING doing in the ratings post-bloodbath?

I've seen the sets for the other three stations, they are A+ compared to the sub-par "news" I have to watch in Yakima/Tri-Cities.
Note to Seattle viewers: don't watch our newscasts if you're expecting professional quality. Even reading the Yakima Herald or Tri-City Herald is better than watching our newscasts sometimes. KEPR/KIMA are two of the last Sinclair stations left with the old Fisher 2006-era graphics.

Good luck to Annie Andrews @ KCPQ! Is she a morning, weekend or weeknight reporter? I think she will enjoy people like M.J McDermott., Bill Wixey, David Rose...they've been at 13 for many years now. We used to watch them in the mornings almost every day.

Truer words... it just looks awful and I actually find it agitating to the point that I go watch KOMO. I don't understand how it ever got approved.

Don't know exactly, but she was doing an afternoon "studio standup", which leads me to believe she will be utilized as an in-studio reporter/anchor. Perhaps weekends, but nothing has been announced on their website.

Yeah, I was at first interested in this new look for KING, but is painfully becoming apparent that it is weak. Unfortunately, they have little space to correct this. More to come...

I agree that Dave Wagner is a great addition to KIRO's staff. He reminds me somewhat of Don Porter, who also came to Seattle with a lot of experience.

Look for more of Wagner as Raible transitions into his Seahawk radio gig. Perhaps they are grooming him for the main anchor spot, don't know. I think KIRO could do one simple thing to make them among the upper tier. Use live backgrounds. It isn't that expensive, and it is the state of the art today. The set is there, they just need to make the most of it, and upgrade the background. Just simple local news 101.

One positive move for KING-5 ... they snapped up Heather Bosch, who left CBS News in New York a couple of months ago to return to Seattle for family reasons. She hasn't done TV in what, over 15 years?

Any word on a chief meteorologist yet?

Don't know about the chief meteorologist. But ftvlive.com and tvspy.com have reported that David Espinosa-Hall, most recently in Florida, has been hired as an "evening" anchor. I assume he will be in Greg Copeland's old position at 4pm, 9pm, and perhaps an evening anchor on NWCN.

I think that is a good guess. The press release mentions that Espinosa-Hall will work evenings and nightside. His last two markets were Orlando and Kansas City.

Mark Wright moves to the noon, 4, 5, and 6:30 newscasts. Presumably David Espinosa-Hall takes the 7, 9, 10, and 11.

KING5 has been redoing the bios page on the website for the last few weeks. Matsukawa's bio is missing (as are many others) but if you google her a new upload with a new headshot went up today and the language has changed ... it now specifies that she anchors the 5, 6:30, 7, 10 and 11 newscasts.

So does that mean we get...

Noon: Mimi Jung and Mark Wright
4: Amanda Grace and Mark Wright
5: Lori Matsukawa and Mark Wright
6:30: Lori Matsukawa and Mark Wright
7: Lori Matsukawa and David Espinosa-Hall
9: Amanda Grace and David Espinosa-Hall
10: Lori Matsukawa and David Espinosa-Hall
11: Lori Matsukawa and David Espinosa-Hall

We'll see if that's how it ends up shaking out, or if Amanda Grace picks up another newscast in there (w/ Lori at 7?).

Still no announcement about a Chief Meteorologist...

Well, as a point of comparison, TEGNA-owned KPNX didn't officially have a chief meteorologist for several years. They had an evening meteorologist, Caribe Devine, but didn't start officially calling her Chief Meteorologist until a couple of years later. Now, Caribe seems to be anchoring the evening news more than doing the weather. Hopefully, KING stays a bit more organized that KPNX though.
